21| The Heart of a Statue
Darkness has a terrible habit of engulfing innocence in this earth. It's wicked. It's cruel. Once the roots of darkness begin to grow in your heart, it's quite hard to get rid of them.

It was dark and cold inside the cave, I sat there rubbing the stones vigorously to ignite the dry leaves. I felt tired and my body shivered due to the cold atmosphere around me. My gown was wet and dirty. My hair was braided and it was in a terrible condition. I was hungry, I didn't eat for 2 days.
I squeezed my long jacket to remove the water from it and took the warmth of the fire, I rubbed my arms and dried my palm. I moved my knees towards my chest and rested my head on it.
Suddenly, I heard something. I lifted my head, examined my surrounding. I grabbed my bow and stood up. I got ready with an arrow and advanced towards the sound.
The sound wasn't of someone speaking or something falling. It was different. It started to get loud as I went closer.
After some time, I came across a statue. A statue that was made of marble. It was a lady who was on her knees, with her hand crossed on her chest. The sound was maximum at this point. A sudden thought struck my brain and I realized that the sound was coming from the statue, It was like a beating drum, a heartbeat.
I put the arrow down and got closer, taking my each steps carefully. I observed the statue with much concern. Her face was quite familiar.
'I know her. It's Sofia.'
She was grieving, I remember her story. I kept my hand over her heart. The heartbeat stopped for some second, suddenly blood began to drain from her eyes like a fountain. It lifted her head and screamed.
My eyes went wide, I felt a sudden shiver run down my spine. I moved my hand away from her forcefully.
There was total silence. The statue's mouth was still opened. I looked down to my hand. For one second, I didn't know what to do, I was speechless, my hands were covered with blood and I was holding her heart.
°°°
I opened my eyes and sat up, I glanced towards the clock, 3:55. I kept a hand over my head and wiped the sweat off my head. Suddenly the door slammed open.
"Are you okay, You were screaming?"
Alexander was wearing a white t-shirt and black joggers. His hair was messy. He gazed at my terrified face. He advanced towards my bed and sat at its edge.
"I pulled her heart out."
"What?"
"I pulled--"
He placed a hand over my shoulder and said,
"It was just a dream."
I opened my mouth to say something but he cut me off.
"Do as I say, Close your eyes."
I laid down and closed my eyes. He placed a finger over my head.
"Think you are sitting by the shore of the ocean and feel the wind that collides with your skin."
All of a sudden, I found myself sitting by the shore of the ocean. I was still in that gown but this time my dress wasn't dirty. My hair was untied. I sat there hugging my knees. It felt good.
I stood up and walked towards the ocean. The cool water touched my feet, It was glamorous, As if it was some kind of magic. After those horrible nightmares, this made me comfortable. I smiled.
I looked up, to recieve the warm heat of the sun.
I opened my eyes and glanced towards the clock, 9:15. I got down off the bed and smiled. I turned the knob of the door.
For the first time, I stretched my arms. I felt like a normal human being, no threat and I wasn't scared. All because of Alexander but...
'How did he do it?'
