~ Chapter 35: Damon's family. ~
At seven sharp, we parked in front of Damon’s old house. We got out of the car and I took his hand to let him know I was there for him. We walked all the way to the door and I rose on my tiptoes to kiss him.
“Ready?”
Damon slightly nodded so I pushed the doorbell. The door opened just a few seconds later on Damon’s mother who already had tears welling up in her eyes when she saw her son. She pulled him into a hug and wiped her eyes quickly. She hugged me too and smiled. But it wasn’t one of those good smiles that warmed your heart, it was one that was just half-happy, tainted with sadness, one that you don’t have a clue how to respond to.
“I am SO happy to see you both, come in.”
We stepped inside the house. It hadn’t changed that much. Just a few more pictures from Damon and his friends in the living room.
“You are such a beautiful young woman Leah.” Damon’s mother said. “I cant believe you’re twenty already, it feels like yesterday that you and Damon were playing in the backyard.”
I smiled. She led us to the kitchen where her husband was cooking something that smelled delicious. He wiped his hands on his apron and hugged us both.
“Leah, you grew up so much!” He exclaimed. “How’s your brother?”
“Good.”
“He changed a lot.” Damon added.
“Oh! And your parents?”
“Fine too.”
“Oh, well tell them to give us a call and maybe we’ll meet for coffee or something, it’s been a while.”
They used to be really great friends when we lived in the same town and stopped seeing each other a little after we moved. I think the crash was too painful for them too since they knew all of our dead friends’ parents and felt… too lucky around them that Damon, Kara and I had survived and their children hadn’t. It wasn’t fair so they didn’t want to rub it in their noses I guess. Anyway they had lost touch, which was very unfortunate and I wanted them to see each other again.
“Promise. Can I help set the table or cook something?”
“No, dear, thank you, just go in the living room with Damon we’ll be right out.”
“Ok.”
Damon said he wanted to see his old room so he got up there and I stayed down, thinking maybe he wanted some time alone.
“Leah! Come up!” He called a few minutes later.
So I did and found him on his bed with a sword in his hands.
“Oh my god! Is this the…”
“Lemon army sword.” He completed.
“I can’t believe you kept it!”
“Of course I did!”
I smiled and looked around the room. I recognized most of his stuff except for the decorations teenage Damon must have hang on the walls. We stayed in his room for a little while, reminiscing about the old times and kissing.
“You know, teenage me who was lying in this bed would have never thought he would be kissing you on it five years later.” Damon said.
Right at that time, Damon’s mum called us downstairs. We got up and joined the Hollins downstairs. They had set the table with nice plates and the food smelled delicious. The first part of dinner wasn’t that bad, we talked about our trips, what we had seen or done, about Jenny, Seth and seeing Kara again. And then the conversation shifted to Damon’s disease when no one meant to talk about it when Damon grabbed the tablecloth so hard the pasta plate fell on its side.
