"zach! phones for you!" i get off the couch and grab the phone from my mom, "hello?"
"is this zachary herron?" i nod but remember they can't see him. "yes this is him. who is this?"
"I'm George from the sport directory of Duke University."

"oh. can i ask why you're calling?"
"we've seen you play soccer and we want to offer you a scholarship."
"thank you so much but i can't accept."
"are you sure? we have an amazing soccer program. you would fit well."
"i completely understand that but soccer was just a high school thing for me."

"i highly suggest you think about it."
"i will. thank you." i hang up the phone and face my mom who was standing a few feet away from me. "another scholarship?"
"from Duke." i let out a sigh and trudge up to my room. i love soccer and i know i have talent but it isn't what i want to do with the rest of my life.

i message jade and tell her about the offer to which she replies with, 'have u guys talked more about california?'
we haven't really. we only have a few months left until we graduate. we got offered the deal but none of us fully accepted it. of course it's what we want to do, we just haven't signed anything yet. we probably should have a meeting.

i walk downstairs and see my mom cooking dinner, "hey. anything in the mail?"
"nothing you're looking for."
"i don't get it! zach just texted me that he got another scholarship yet NYU can't even send anything!"
"you just have to be patient. im sure you'll get a letter soon."
"i hope." after that she tells me dinners done so we sit at the dining table and eat the dinner she made.

the next day at school i was walking through the halls when a girl in my grade, sophie, runs past me to her friend who was standing at her locker. "I GOT IN!"
"you got into NYU?! no way! im so proud of you soph." that must mean that my letter must've finally came.

i send my mom a text asking but i know she won't see the message for a while. "jade! i just heard that sophie got into NYU, did your letter come yet?"
"i don't know! my mom won't get back to me for a while. I'll have to wait."
"hey so the guys and i are having a band meeting after school. wanna come?"
"would love to but can't."

"just make sure you tell me when you get the letter." i nod and say goodbye before heading to my class.
