Too Late to Turn Back

Within a blink of an eye, it became the week of Halloween, and I was still set in the idea of not attending the school's halloween dance. Every day after my birthday party, everyone but Maac was heavily trying to convince me to go with the group and to not be such a "party pooper" and ruining the plans they all had to do a group costume. I, on the other hand, was more than happy to not attend the mess that was being hosted by our high school in the makeshift gym that was not even a gym, let alone an auditorium. Plus, I had too many things that needed to get done before the end of the year. For example, I had to finish any last minute touches on the set of our fall play. And we had to also start working on the set for the late spring before we fall behind. On top of all that, I have to prep for tennis try-outs and get ready to start taking time out of my school day to visit other schools to talk more about the benefits of joining us in the fall.

So you can imagine my annoyance when once again Elisa and Maria came trotting over to me that Monday morning with a grin on their faces as they sat down next to me in the lunch room with their packed lunches.

"So... have you decided yet, Sel?" Maria poked as she opened her container that held some spanish rice made from scratch by her mother. "The costumes won't work if we have all three of the boys but you don't join us!"

"And again, why can't Kass take my spot in the whole thing?" I retorted as I took a bite into my heated up grilled cheese as I debated if I wanted to heat my my tomato soup or leave it for a different day.

"I mean she can, but..." Elisa tried to respond.

"Then have her do it."

"But it would be weird if she took your place with Ryan! She's not his girl. Plus, don't forget she decided that last minute she was going with a group of girls in her class, so she is out of the equation, now. So we need you more than ever," Maria pointed out

"I'm sorry, but you know how much I hate Halloween as a whole. It's not happening."

"Selena...!" Elisa begged.

I had lost my appetite at this point, and had packed what was left of my lunch back into my lunchbox before getting up and walking away from the table as Will, Ryan, and Danny were walking ver to join us.

"Sel? Are you okay?' Ryan asked with concern in his eyes.

"Yeah..." I lied. "I just forgot that I promised Mr.G that I would help him with something. I will see you guys later."

"How? He has a class right now!" Will shouted after me as I sped away to the stairs the farthest away from them before ascending up them instead of down them. Mr. G was in the basement, but I had no reason to go to his class. Will was right. He would be in the middle of a chemistry lesson. But I knew someone who was always happy to have me in their class, if in the middle of a lesson or in the middle of their break period. And thankfully this teacher was in the middle of a prep period.

"Again?" they asked me as I entered into the classroom, shutting the door I came in through behind me.

"Maria and Elisa were hounding me about the Halloween dance," I replied as I placed my lunchbox down on my desk before subconsciously covering up the bracelet I had received only a few days prior. "They know where I stand with the whole thing, Maac. I don't get why they won't let it go."

I played with the yin and yang on the chain as I zoned out. Since having the bracelet, I have been hounded non-stop by everyone but my parents where I got it from. Especially Ryan. Since seeing it, he has been the worse, hounding me non-stop to an almost demanding demeanour when asking who gave it to me. I had forgotten about the next morning, after receiving the bracelet, he called all upset at me from hearing news about the piece of jewelry from social media instead of seeing it in person.
