Everyone always talks about meeting 'the one'. Fantasizing when they would be walking down the hall, then get pushed over, their things flying everywhere. Then, a stranger helps them, grabbing their hand as color fills their eyes. Then they kiss, and live happily ever after.

Alright, that sounded a little cheesy, right? It had been like that for as long as humanity could remember. The scenario wasn't always the same, but it always ended the same. Or, at least that's what everyone forced them to think.

Sitting at the cafeteria table, Jaz sighed as she placed her head in her palm, her elbow resting on the table. The world was still black and white, as always. After reading so many romance books, her love on the topic didn't mirror on her own romantic life. As her other friends filled in gaps, she listened and laughed along with them.

Abby was still ecstatic over finding her soulmate, Madi. The way their colors arrived was strange however. They had always been close and it wasn't the first time they hugged. Yet, a week ago, when they hugged they gasped about colors.

"Hey, did you guys hear what happened to Mya?" Dan had caught the attention of all of them, none of them speaking. "Yesterday, I was getting stuff out of my locker when she was talking to someone about how she saw colors yet her soulmate didn't." Silence had followed.

"What happened to her?" Sara asked, leaning in closer as if she was taking in everything. The others mirrored her actions.

"Mr Bale walked by and told her to come with him." Dan had looked like he was holding in something else.

"Is that it?" Abby asked, confused by the words coming out of the short man's mouth sitting on the floor.

"She hasn't spammed her Instagram." Dan pointed out, as the air became a different type of silence. It wasn't suspense, but fear.

Once everyone was walking out, the group saw Mr Bale starring at them. Nobody dared to meet his eyes, in fear that he would know. Students were already going missing, they didn't want to be on the list.

-

"Jaz, can you help me open my locker?" Sara had asked, Jaz startled to see the tall girl standing next to her locker.

"Uh, yea sure." Jaz had followed Sara down to the locker.

"36,25,78." Sara had listed out, Jaz putting the numbers into the dial. Once the locker had popped open, Sara smiled. "Thanks!"

"No problem." Jaz mumbled, feeling her face redden. Afraid Sara would see the color difference on her face, she quickly turned around and returned to her locker. Once Jaz threw her jacket in her locker, she turned to see Sara waiting for her.

"I wanted to walk with you, since Jared already ran off with Jacob." Sara smiled again, as Jaz felt a twinge in her heart.

"Sure." Jaz had looked down, afraid to look into Sara's gray eyes. It didn't matter, since the rest of the room was the same shades of black and white.

"Move, hoes!" Screamed a basketball player as f it was a warning, even though he had already slammed Jaz into Sara.

"Watch it!" Sara yelled, grabbing Jaz's shoulders to steady her. As Jaz looked up to see Sara's smiling face, she took in her features more. Soft face, blue eyes, pinkish dyed hair. Wait.

HOLY SHIT.

"We, we should get to class." Jaz stuttered on her words, walking up the stairs in haste. Sara followed behind, confused and concerned for her friend.
