Chapter 9

“Mean To Me” by Brett Eldredge

10 DAYS LATER

Thomas’ Pov

I walk down her hallway after dropping her off after our date tonight. I look back at least 10 times, just to make sure she wasn’t still out there. I go down to the lobby and then out to my bike. I hop on and ride my bike home. I can’t stop thinking about her. She means so much to me. Even though I just met Maddy, I feel like I’ve known her my life. I get home and park my bike in the garage. I unlock my door, still thinking of Maddy. I think of the first time I brought Maddy here and how she ran in here and spun around in the living room. I think of how she jump of the couch and lay there. I think of how Maddy picked “Nanny Mcphee” to watch. I think of how we sat on the couch together and watch it and she told me how cute I was as a kid.

I go into my kitchen to make a snack for myself. Then my phone starts ringing. I recognize the ringtone as my Mom’s. I answer it and say

“Hey Mum!”

“Thomas!” she yells with excitement “I love your song! It’s beautiful” she tells me.

“Thanks Mum,” I say. I wonder if she’s going to ask who I wrote it about. Even if she did ask, should I tell her the truth.

“It’s truly amazing! I am so proud of you,” she says. I can tell she has on a huge grin. Then I hear a faint voice in the background, it’s Ava, my sister.

“Mom, is that Thomas?” Ava says, faintly.

“Yes, why, do you want to talk to him?” My Mom asks, not into the phone, but I can still hear it pretty clearly.

“Yes!” Ava says, then I hear static. “Hey big brother!” she practically yells into the phone. Why is my family so loud? I ask myself.

“Hey, little sis,” I say into the phone. I miss my family. Since I moved out I don’t see them as much. Just at performances, rehearsal, and family events.

“I love your song so, so, so much!” she tells me. I’m about to thank her when she asks the question I was hoping neither one of them would ask.

“Thomas, who is the song about? And don’t tell it’s not about someone because a song that good can’t not be about someone!” she blurts. I freeze. What do I say?

“Thomas?” my sister says, I realize I zoned out and I still don’t know what to say.

“Oh, sorry, umm… I…” I stutter. I don’t know what to say.

“Thomas! Just tell me who she is, please!” Ava says, I can just picture her batting her eyes like and idiot. I let out an annoyed sigh and decide to tell her about Maddy.

“Okay, okay. Her name’s Maddy. I met her a couple days ago. And well, she’s kind of my girlfriend now,” I tell Ava.

“What do you mean she’s kind of your girlfriend?” she asks trying to dig into my personal life. But I decide to tell her the whole story of how Maddy and I met. I tell her about the night before and I tell Ava how I feel about Maddy. Then after about 15 minutes of ranting about Maddy I say

“Yeah I just love her so much,” I shock myself by saying this. I hear Ava go silent. There’s a long moment of just breathing then Ava says

“Did you tell her?”

“No,” I say

“Go,” she replies. I know what I have to do.
