Chapter 12
“My Girl” Temptations
We take a cab to my parents’ house because it’s too far and too cold to take my bike tonight. I knock on the door and my Mom answers it. I feel Maddy’s hand shaking as I’m holding it.
“Hi, Mum,” I say and kiss my Mom on the cheek. “Mum, this is my girlfriend, Maddy Erickson. Maddy this is my Mum,” I introduce them and they shake hands. My Mom’s smile is huge. She seems so happy. We all walk inside and I introduce Maddy to my Dad, my sister and my sister’s boyfriend, Harry, who happen to be coming over tonight for the first time also. We sit at the dinner table as my Mom finishes up cooking our dinner. I sit next to Maddy. I see she looks nervous still. So I put my hand on her thigh. I see her instantly calm. She takes a deep breath, then exhales. My Mom walks into the room with a huge plate of roast and potatoes. I smell the delicious smells of my Mom’s home cooking.
After eating we all sit in the living room talking and getting to know each other.
“Mum, did you know Maddy’s a writer. That’s why she’s here in London. She’s writing about the experiences she has had here,” I tell everyone.
“Wow! That’s fantastic. What kind of writing do you mainly do?” My Mom asks Maddy.
“Well, my job is for a magazine. And I usually write about personal experiences, like being in London,” Maddy explains to my Mom. I smile when I see her finally relax and talk about something she loves. “But this is my first trip out of the country, so it’s really different,”
“Are you into other kinds of writing too?” Ava asks, holding Harry’s hand.
“Umm… Actually, I want to write a book. I have been working up to it. Journalism just pays the bills. Writing is writing, but I really want to write my own book,” Maddy explains.
“What kind of book?” My Dad asks.
“Probably somewhere along the lines of teen sci fi,” Maddy says.
After another hour or two of conversation. I tell my family Maddy and I have to leave. We get a cab and have it drop us off at my penthouse. I unlock the door and we step inside.
“Well that went great!” I tell her.
“You think so?” Maddy says. Does she think it went bad?
“What do you mean ‘you think so?’” I ask.
“I don’t know. Just want to make sure they like me,” she tells me. I hold her close and whisper in her ear.
“They like you, I know it,” I tell her.
Last Day in London
It’s my last day in London, for who knows how long. I pray not too long. Just incase I pack clothes for about a month. I hear a knock at my door and I run over and open it. It’s Maddy, with her suitcases and backpacks. I’m going to miss London, but I won’t let Maddy just leave. I finish packing and we call a cab. We get dropped off at the airport.
Maddy and I fall asleep on the plane and before I know it we are in Wisconsin. That's when I start to feel the nervousness Maddy must have felt the day she met my parents. I grab Maddy’s hand and watch her eyes flutter open. She must see that I’m scared because she squeezes my hand and kisses my cheek.
“It’ll be fine,” she tells me “I love you,”
“Thanks, love,” I tell her and kiss her forehead “I love you too,”
