The Heirlooms

"Wh-what are the Heirlooms?" Varian inquired, setting down the drawing in his hands.

"Those two necklaces." Ulla pointed to the necklace drawings. "This one is called the Gift." She pointed to the one with the crystal. "And this one is the Reversion." She then pointed to the necklace with the onyx.

"Each of those necklaces has a special power that they possess. The Gift will glow whenever the wearer is safe, while the Reversion hums whenever the wearer is in danger. The brighter the glow, the safer you are. The louder the hum, the more danger you are in."

"What does Oskar want with this Reversion then?" Rose asked, glancing at the pictures.

"Well, they do more than just that. But their great powers can only be obtained a certain way. For the Gift's great power to be unlocked, it must be passed down to someone from the heart. For the Reversion's great power..." Ulla's face was grim. "You must kill the former user."

"Did-did Oskar..."

Ulla closer her eyes as she nodded. "Oskar did obtain the Reversion's great power. This means that whenever he presses the onyx, fear is emitted into all who stands near him."

Varian and Rose's eyes widened. That explained that sudden rush of helplessness they had had when Oskar had disappeared.

"The Gift, though, will encase the user in a large force field. That's why we must find it. As long as Oskar doesn't find it first, we should be fine," Ulla explained.

"Why? What happens if he has both of them?" Varian inquired.

Ulla took a deep breath. "Only the worst. When the Gift and Reversion are combined, they create the Heirloom. Even more powerful then each of the necklaces. Their powers are combined. The wearer would be protected from danger while fear spreads throughout all of those around them. It would be almost impossible to stop them."

"How would you stop them?" Rose asked, listening intently.

"You'd have to find a way to rip the necklace off of them," Ulla told her. "Then break it in half, so that it turns back into its separate forms." She shook her head slowly. "But the chances of doing that would be very slim. With the force field and fear, I don't believe you'd have enough strength to destroy it."

"What're we destroying?" a voice suddenly asked, making all three of them jump. They turned to see Kenny, who was rubbing his eyes, with Splash tagging behind him.

"This Heirloom," Varian explained, motioned to the drawings. "If these two necklaces are combined... it's pretty much the end of the world!"

"Way to look on the positive side of things," Rose mumbled. "C'mon, Varian. It's not the total end of the world. I mean, there'd still be a chance of saving everything."

"A slim chance," Varian told her with a mocking smile.

Rose just rolled her eyes with a grin.

"Hold on a second, that looks like the necklace Oskar had," Kenny said, leaning over their shoulders to get a better look.

"That's because it is Oskar's necklace," Varian explained. "And he's not planning anything good with it."

"So it wasn't a family heirloom?"

"Nope. He actually,"- he glanced at Splash before lowering his voice- "Killed someone for it."

Kenny's face paled. "Are you serious?! I mean, he looked like a creep, but jeez!"

"What?" Splash asked out of curiosity. When no one answered, he put a hand on his hip. "Oh, come on guys. I may be younger than you but I'm still fifteen."

Kenny sighed. "Alright. You know that weirdo, Oskar?"

Splash nodded.

"Well... he, uh, he killed someone."

Splash's eyes widened. "Eww. Eww. EWW!"

Kenny went up to Splash. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have told you." He rubbed the kid's forearms.

Ulla cleared her throat. "Would you mind introducing me?"

"Oh, right!" Varian turned to Kenny and Splash. "Kenny, Splash, this is my mom, Ulla."

"You found her?" Kenny quizzed, his eyes growing larger by the second. "But we looked all over this town and she was nowhere to be seen!"

"Well, here I am!" Ulla said with a large smile. She chuckled. "You really were looking all over for me?"

"Of course," Varian told her. "I would look all over the Seven Kingdoms twice if it meant I could find you."

Ulla wrapped her arms around her son. "Oh, you are so sweet!"

Varian smiled, but tapped her arm. "Thanks, but I, uh, can't breathe."

Ulla giggled and let go of him. "Sorry."

Not long after, the others woke up, too. Varian introduced them to his mother, and introduced his mother to them. Eventually, they were all caught up.

Ulla went up to Olympia. "Oh, my goodness. It really is you. I haven't seen you since you were just a baby."

"Aunt Ulla." A large smile came across her face, and she gave Ulla a large hug.

"I've heard you're using an alias now," Ulla said with a small grin.

Olympia rubbed her arm in an embarrassed manor. "Yeah. But please don't tell anyone my real name."

Ulla exchanged a glance with Varian and Rose. "Uh..."

"You told them?!" Olympia shouted.

"I didn't know that you didn't want me to tell them!" Ulla explained. "But, come on. This is your cousin and his girlfriend. Can't you trust them?"

The red head glared at them for a second before saying, "Fine."

"Welp, now that you've found your mom, I'm guessing this crazy trip is over, right?" Viper asked.

"Not even close," Varian told him, earning him lots of shocked looks. Ulla explained everything she had told Varian and Rose to the others, so that they were now caught up. There was some confusion and surprise.

"So now all we have to do is find the Gift, and make sure Oskar doesn't get it first," Rose then explained.

"I think it may be a little too late for that."

Everyone turned to see a man in a cloak, standing ominously behind them. He lowered his hood to reveal a bearded face with salt and pepper hair. It was Oskar.

And in his hand was the Gift.
