My stomach had finally quietened down after I had wolfed down some cereal and now I was on my way to the woods, damp curls piled on my head in a messy bun.
Reaching the woods, and wandering around the elegant trees, I realised she hadn't come yet, so I perched on a tree and swung my legs, opening a bag of chilli doritos found in the back of the cupboard. After dropping many crumbs, beautiful little emerald birds decided to come over and sample this exotic flavour. Deciding they liked it, they hopped around looking for more, little feet sinking into the greenery, so I emptied the rest of the packet on to the floor.
"You like these birdies? Me too. They're my favourite flavour. Didn't think you'd be into them."
I swung my legs some more and continued. "I'm waiting for someone but they're not here yet, I'll go soon if she doesn't come, I've been waiting aaages." I burbled.
Suddenly a hand gripped my shoulder and I spun round so fast I almost toppled off the tree I was perched on.
Emerald green eyes bored into mine and I found myself grinning.
"Hey, you're here, I've been waiting a while."
"I heard." She chuckled. "Made some new friends?"
I blushed. "Uhm, y-yeah, I mean, no!"
She climbed up onto the tree and sat next to me.
"Soo... what's new?"
"Uhm, not much?" I said, smiling, Jack floating around in my mind.
"Don't give me that! I haven't known you long, but any fool can see you're hiding something!"
"Okay, well, I met this guy yesterday. He works at the supermarket, and he wanted me to meet him , so I did. He's called Jack, and oh, wow, he's cute. We went to the woods and... stuff. He says he lives the other end of the forest, like you! You haven't ever seen him, have you? He looks like Alex Pettyfer. Hard to miss really. And he likes me! He said he's got a brother and sister, like you and Daniel." I burbled.
Amber's exppression was unreadable, eyes downcast.
"But... he says... they live in London. Which is a shame. I'd love to meet them. I bet his family is really nice. What? You... you don't know him do you?" I hesitated.
"Hm?" Amber looked up at me. "No! no, never heard of him!" She smiled warmly, but there was something behind her vivid eyes that I couldn't read.
"Uh, you?" I asked.
"What? Oh, erm no, nothing new really. Daniel fell off the tree when you'd gone. He burst his lip."
"Aw, no."
She smiled warmly at me and tucked her wild red curls behind her ear. On her ear a little gold earring peeked out, a four leaf clover. It gleamed in the sunlight.
"Cute earring."
"Um, thanks." She ducked her head and let her curls cover her face.
We lapsed into silence. I turned and smiled at her, and her emerald eyes pierced through me. Something shot through my brain. Like a kind of 'ping!' Her eyes were the exact match to Jacks. I was just about to comment on this when I heard a shout in the distance, from the thresholds of the woods I had not explored.
"Amberrrr! Amberrr?!" It was a man's voice, deep and powerul, butdistant, so distant I thought I'd maybe imagined it.
"Did someone just... call you?" I asked.
"I can't hear anybody... I've got to go though, I'm, um, supposed to be back soon. Bye!"
She hopped off the tree and began jogging through the woods, bare feet sinking into the moss, white dress whirling around her, until all I could see was a white whirl and wild red hair.
