True to his word, Elias didn't push Solveigh. In fact, he hardly treated her any differently than he had before his declaration. Sol told herself she was being ridiculous; Trey was over her and she needed to let go. Every time she picked up the phone to call Elias, though, she froze. So the rest of the holiday break passed without Sol coming to a decision.
For the first time in her life Sol was actually glad to be going back to school. Maybe having something to focus on would get her out of her head. She certainly didn't have any time to think as she moved back into her dorm, what with her roommate, Gracie's, unceasing chatter. Gracie simply had to tell Sol every single detail of her family's trip.
I did ask for a distraction, Sol thought glumly as Gracie paused for breath before launching right back in. She was just about to look for an opening to escape when Gracie said something that stopped her in her tracks. "But enough about me. Have you heard the latest on out very own Demetrius Bauer?"
Sol knew she perked up immediately at the mention of his name. She was just glad Gracie couldn't see it. "I have not," she replied evenly.
Sol could practically hear the glee in her roommate's voice. "So you know how Masie Elton is friends with that chick who got him the record deal?"
That's not really how it went down, Sol thought, but she only said, "Yes?"
"Apparently, she told Masie they're going steady now." Gracie snorted. "And we all know Masie Elton couldn't keep a secret to save her life. Anyway, it's all over the school now, but that Bauer kid won't say anything..."
Gracie went on, but Sol was no longer listening. She didn't want to believe that Trey was dating that Jessica girl... but Masie wasn't a lier. Sure, she had big mouth, but she always told the truth. Or at least what she knew as the truth. She wasn't the type to check her facts first.
Maybe that was just wishful thinking on Solveigh's part, though. Then again, wasn't this the evidence she had been waiting for? What had she expected, really? That Trey would come crawling back to her, begging for forgiveness? No, that wasn't who he was, and Sol wouldn't want him to change.
She had spent so long hanging on to nothing, waiting for something that was never going to happen. Trey was gone and he was never coming back; she couldn't waste her entire life waiting for him. It was over.
Sol felt the determination fill her and she sat a little straighter. "Hey, excuse me," she said, halting Gracie's chattering. "I gotta use the bathroom. I'll be right back."
With that she grabbed her cane and her phone and slipped into the hallway. Finding an empty seat the dorm's lobby, she turned on her phone. "Call Elias," she said.
The line rang for several moments before she hear Elias' voice. "Solveigh? What's up?"
Closing her eyes, Sol took a deep breath. Goodbye Trey, she thought to herself. I'll never regret what we had. Opening her eyes again she spoke softly. "I'm calling you to let you know I say yes."
There was pause on the other side of the line. "Really?" Elias finally asked.
"Really," Sol answered. "I've given it a lot of thought, and I'm finally ready to move forward. I would be honored to be your girlfriend."
"Oh, my gosh!" Elias exclaimed excitedly, making Sol laugh. "I can't believe it!"
Sol grinned widely, even though he couldn't see it. "Better find a way then because I always mean what I say."
Elias laughed too. "Just give me a second to get over the shock."
Sol giggled, still smiling to herself. It felt so wonderful to finally make a decision; like a mountain had been lifted off her chest. So why did she still feel that nagging sense of emptiness? Shaking herself, Sol pushed the sensation away. She said she was moving on, and nothing was going to hold her back.
