*Marie Up Top*
"Are you trying to tell me that you want me to do something?" I ask him, quietly.
"Maybe. Or maybe I'm just preparing you for the future." Him and his friends laugh.
"It's not like I have a choice."
"Good." He pats me on the head and gets up. "See you soon." He leaves the restaurant and his group follows.
I slouch in the booth and sigh.
The waitress walks up to my table. "Were those boys bothering you?"
I shake my head. "Not at all. They're just roughhousing me."
She gives me a confused look and shakes her head. "What can I get you to drink?"
"Orange juice, please."
"Do you know what you want to eat too?"
"Can I just get a pancake?"
She nods, scribbling on her notepad before walking away.
A girl slides into my booth and sits across from me and I just stare at her.
"Hey." She says.
"Hello."
She looks around. "I want to talk to you about something."
"Talk away."
"You're Daniel's girlfriend, right?" She tries to whisper.
"Not exactly, why? Do you want an autograph or something?"
She laughs and folds her hands on the table. "No, no. I'm Jack's girlfriend, Marie."
I look at her closely. "Oh my gosh! You are!" I whisper yell. "I feel stupid for not recognizing the red hair."
She laughs. "It's okay."
"I didn't know you lived in New Jersey."
"Yup. Jack and I met at a coffee shop four years ago when the boys first started out."
"That's amazing. You're even prettier in person." I practically fawn over her."
"I was thinking, would you want to be friends?"
"Um, yes!"
She smiles at me. "I got to go to work but I'll give you my phone number just let me see your phone."
I awkwardly pull the flip phone out of my purse. She holds it and looks at me. "Long story."
She just nods and types in her info. "Text me later tonight, kay?"
"Sure will."
She gets up and walks out.
The waitress brings me over my food and drink with my bill.
Later that evening, I'm hanging out alone on the beach. I finally text Marie.
That's when Miles walked up to me.
I didn't look up. I didn't want to see his face.
"It's time."
I close my eyes. "What do you want me to do?"
He sits next to me.
"You know that weird kid from our American history class? With the video camera?"
I nod. "I'm aware of his existence. Why?"
"We're going to his house tonight, to steal it."
I look at him. "There's no way I'm doing that. Not for you. Not for anyone. Leave that poor boy alone."
He pushes me. I fall into the sand.
"You have to. You don't want anything happening to Olivia, do you?"
"Of course not. But he loves that camera. It's his life. Why do you want it?"
"I don't want to buy a new one. So, when it gets dark, meet me outside his house. Got it?"
I nod again. I try my best not to cry after he walks away.
I really want to talk too Daniel. But I can't involve him in this. He'll try to fix things. And he might get hurt. I sit back up and look around hoping that nobody saw. Nobody was paying attention. I sit around until it gets dark. Then I make my way to the house.
I don't want to do this at all.
He walks up next to me. "You ready?"
I look at him. "Of course I'm not ready."
He laughs. "That's too bad. Now come on, he left his window open."
I shake my head following him around to the side of the house.
"I'm going to lift you but you're going to have to go in there and get it."
I take a deep breathe.
He picks me up and I climb into the window. I look around the room. I don't know where it is. Maybe I should just wake him up and tell him what's going on. But I know I can't.
I bump into his desk and I watch him to see if he heard me. But, nothing. I see the camera on the desk, and I grab it quickly and go back to the window. He takes it from me then helps me down.
"Look at you. I knew you could do this."
I take off and run home.
