It wasn't long before graduation. My parents, Liam and Daniel were there for me. Jack came for Marie. It was supposed to be one of the happiest days. It was also one of the saddest.
Marie walked across the stage and the principal said, "Marie Nelson, going to Standford University for bioengineering." Everyone clapped.
I was more nervous because I haven't told Daniel where I was going, and he was about to find out from someone else.
"Eleanor Carter, going to Columbia University for Early Childhood Education." Everyone clapped for me, but I had to look for Daniel. He was happy, but you could see the hurt on his face.
Afterwards, I met up with Marie and Jack. They were leaving the day after graduation. She was taking classes over the summer and had to get started right away.
My parents told me I could stay and talk too everyone. There wasn't a lot of people I talked too anyone.
"Hey." I heard someone says. I turn around and it's Miles.
"Oh. Hi."
"I just wanted to say congratulations. And I'm sorry for everything, I know I can't make it up to you, but you'll do well out there."
I just nodded my head.
Oliva walked up to me. "New York, huh?"
"Yeah. I've always wanted to go."
"Good for you. I decided to stay here."
"Whatever is best for you." I said to her, not really caring.
Finally, Colton made his way over to me. He was going to MIT. Obviously, he was a huge nerd. "Be safe out there in the city. I heard it's rough."
"I think I'll make it. I dealt with four years at this school."
"Touche." He said.
I was standing by myself for a while. I thought Daniel wasn't ever going to come look for me, but I was wrong.
"Hey." He said, flowers in hand. "Congrats." He handed me the flowers.
"Thank you. "I went to kiss his cheek, but he backed away.
"I want to talk to you. Could we go somewhere?"
"Yeah, of course."
We got into his car and he drove to a random parking lot.
"Why didn't you tell me you were going to New York?" He asks.
"I was afraid. But, if you think about it, it's no different from where I am now, and how we're doing things."
"I know but things aren't always going to be as easy as they are right now. I thought maybe you'd come out to LA."
"I thought about it, but I couldn't pick a relationship over my future."
"I'm not your future?" He gave me a sad look.
"That's not what I meant. I wasn't thinking about us when I made my decision. I'm sorry that it doesn't fit your standards."
"What does this mean for us, El?"
I sighed. "We could spend the summer together, before I go."
"I leave in a month for tour, but I suppose."
With that, we spent every day together, as much time as we could before our time was up. Movies, ice cream dates, we kissed a lot. I never wanted it to end, but it had too.
It was finally the day when Daniel had to leave for tour, he stopped by my house before he left.
We stood outside for a while.
"I hope you have a good time." I told him.
"I'll try my best. I'll miss you."
"I'll miss you too, but you can talk to me whenever."
"Yeah, same goes for you."
We kissed, and we said our goodbyes.
The last month before college was boring. I had no friends, nothing to do, except pack for college.
My time came when I was getting ready to leave, I was about to pack up my dad's car when I heard a car horn.
"I can take you." The person says. I looked around and it was Daniel.
I looked at my dad. "If he wants to drive, then sure."
I gave him a smile and loaded up Daniel's car. "I'm surprised to see you here."
"I had a little break, and I remembered you were moving in today. I thought we could spend our last day together."
I didn't like hearing that.
We sang most of the car ride, and it was amazing. Unfortunately, the car ride was short. We sat outside of the school in the car for a while.
"I know I said this before, but I really am going to miss you." He said to me.
"I'm going to miss you too, but maybe someday we'll be together again."
"Someday isn't soon enough." He kissed me, and it made me even more sad.
We got out of the car and grabbed my stuff. We held it while looking at the building.
"Daniel, I love you."
He just looked at me.
"I know it has taken me a while to say it, but I know how I feel now."
"It's really bad timing."
"I guess I just always thought we would have this."
"I did too."
He walked me to my dorm, and we put everything onto the bed. He was quick to pull me into a hug.
"I'm sorry." I say.
"Why?"
"Just know that I am."
A girl walks in and looks at us.
"I guess this is my cue to go." He kisses me one last time, like he really meant it. "Bye El."
"Goodbye Daniel."
And with that, he walked away like nothing ever happened.
