I get outside of my house and I sit on the steps. I pull out my phone and I call Daniel.
He sounds tired when he answers. "Ellie. What's up. It's 11 o'clock at night."
"I know, I know. And I'm sorry. But I need someone to talk too."
He sighs and I can hear him moving around. Then I hear a door close. "What's up?"
"There's this guy that bullies me and-"
"Wait, what?" He asks, with concern.
"He started dating my friend and he's making me do things for him because he keeps threatening to hurt her. He just made me steal from a house."
"Ellie, no. Why didn't you say anything before?"
"I didn't want you to help."
He sighs again. "Alright. Look, I'm coming out right now. I'll be there soon." He hangs up.
I go up to my room.
The Next Morning
I wake up and Daniel is in my bed next to me.
He puts his hand over my mouth before I can scream and then he laughs. "I'm sorry. I didn't want your parents to catch me."
"It's okay. I'm just glad you're here." I hugged him tight and he hugged me back.
"So, who is this guy? And why does this guy hurt you?"
I shrug and pull away. "I'm an easy target. He's always bullied me."
He looks at me. "Did something specific happen?"
I sigh. "A few years ago, something did."
"What was it?"
"I don't want to tell you."
"Ellie, you can tell me anything."
I sit up. "Can I though?"
"I'd like to think so."
"His name is Miles. We went to middle school together, and he always picked on me for being myself. Then we got to high school, freshman year, and I hit puberty. So one night we had a party and we went upstairs together. We kissed for a while and when he tried to go further, I pushed him off and he beat me up. Then all year he told everyone that we hooked up. Everyone treated me like garbage and ever since he's just been a jerk to me. He takes advantage of me because he knows I'm afraid of him. I love Olivia. I don't want anything to happen to her."
"Do you really think he'd hurt her? I know she's your friend, but you can't keep letting yourself get hurt to protect her."
"I think he would. He hurt me." I look away from him.
"We have to put a stop to this." He sits up. "We're going to his house."
"Danny."
"No, Ellie. We are."
I shake my head. "Fine."
"Thank you."
We get into his car and we go to his address.
We walk up to his house and his mom answers.
"Oh, hey Ellie.
"Can we talk too Miles?" I ask, in the nicest voice possible.
"Yes." She moves away from the door. "He's up in his room."
Daniel nods.
"Thank you." I say.
We proceed up the stairs.
Daniel knocks on the door.
Miles answers and just looks at him.
Daniel pushes him inside his room, and I follow, closing the door behind me.
"Do you think it's okay to hit girls?" Daniel asks, still pushing Miles.
Miles laughs his stupid laugh. "What are you trying to do? I could beat you up without even trying."
"I'm defending my girlfriend. You need to leave her alone. She's not doing anything for you anymore."
Miles pushes him, hard. "That's what you think."
Daniel punches him in the face. "No. She's finished with you."
Miles pushes him harder and he hits his back on the corner of the dresser, falling to the floor in pain.
Miles laughs again. "Get out. I have to get ready for school." He walks away from us, and over to his dresser.
I try to help Daniel get up, but he just lays there.
"This isn't over." Daniel whispers.
"I think it is. And if I ever see your face ever again, it will be over." Miles pulls a shirt out of his dresser drawer.
I try to help Daniel again, but I'm not strong enough. "Come on. We have to get out of here."
He looks at me. "No. I'm not letting him hurt you anymore."
Miles pulls him off the floor. "You heard your girl. Leave preppy boy."
Daniel shakes his head and I help him outside.
