When I was single, I used to think that every couple I had even seen or had had contact with was completely annoying and overly attached. This feeling expanded once Fate had gotten a boyfriend. We were just a few months into sharing an apartment when she had met David. He was tall, handsome, funny and a true gentleman. However, this side of him was shown in the first few weeks of their relationship and apparently, they felt the need to show the whole world they were together by having a full out war with their tongues in public places. Anyways, this had annoyed me greatly as well as the stupid giggling she did when he whispered in her ear when we’d watch movies together. But anyways, the thing is that this whole ‘honeymoon phase’ – as many call it – is bound to end at some point. It’s inevitable.
So now here I was, two days into a relationship and completely in the honeymoon phase.
It started when Liam had given me part two of my gift. He had dragged me to his car and sitting in the back seat of his car was a giant teddy bear. Honestly, I wasn’t a fan of those overly done stuffed animals but I honestly couldn’t fight the smile that was threatening to show. He pulled it out and handed it to me with a wide smile.
“I know this is such a stupid gift but it’s cute I swear,” he says while pulling the bear to his chest and taking grasp of its arms. In a baby voice he says, “I got this because I’m beary interested in you.”
I couldn’t help but laugh at this and envelop him into a hug, with Beary – because what other name would it have? – squished in between us.
Once again, when I got home, Fate wouldn’t stop teasing me. Especially because I seemed like a cliché, love-sick puppy which is something that I always swore I wouldn’t become. It’s just that things with Liam were different, we’ve clicked better than any of my past boyfriends.
This morning I had woken up to a good morning text from him – he had given me his number two days ago when we talked at Starbucks – which had automatically put a smile on my face. It didn’t even bug me at all that Fate was a step closer to winning this bet but I honestly doubt I’d invite him to my parents’ New Year’s party so she’ll loose then.
“She honestly placed a bet on us?” Liam questioned as he slipped his Santa shirt on. I nodded once his head had popped out. “And why don’t you want me to go to your parents’ New Year’s party?”
I sighed and put on my shoes. “It’s not that I don’t want you to go it’s just that it might be too soon to meet my parents. I mean, they are so pretentious and always believed that I’d become the perfect girl with a perfect husband – by the age of twenty. Twenty. I don’t know, I don’t want you being scared off by them.”
Liam smiled at me before taking the other shoe from my hand and placing it on my foot. “Hey, nothing could scare me away. I mean, I’ve already dealt with your rage.”
“I never had a rage around you,” I say but he simply scoffs.
“Whatever you say, babe.”
This may be the honeymoon phase but I honestly believe that these butterflies will always be in my stomach every time he’d call me ‘babe’.
