Narrator
Margaret ran until she reached a little restaurant. She walked inside, breathing heavily, she found a seat and bowed her head on the table. She started crying. She tried to keep her volume down so she won't attract attention, but she was not very good at it. Margaret felt someone in her atmosphere, she felt someone handing her a napkin.
Margaret's P.O.V.
"I do believe you need this." A man spoke softly.
I raised my head - not all the way - just high enough to see who it was.
"Thank you." I said softly, taking the napkin and wiping my tears and blowing my nose.
"Is everything alright?" He asked and just then I realized that he has an accent. It was quite beautiful a nice, it was too heavy of an accent, it was just right.
"Uhm ... yeah everything's okay."
He nodded his head and slowly walked away. Minutes later, he came back with Oreo cheesecake and hot chocolate. He placed on my table and slide closer to me. I gave him a confused look - telling him that I didn't order anything - it must've been a mistake.
"It's in the house. Well, not really its going to be off my pay check." He smiled and sat on the chair across from me.
"I can't. I'm sorry."
"No take it. It will make you feel better. Anybody - young or old - feels better after having an Oreo cheesecake with the AMAZING hot chocolate. Try it." He laughed. He reminded me of a child.
I took the fork and gave him a smile. I took a small piece of the cheesecake and taste it.
"This is wonderful." I exclaimed.
"See? I told you." He said. "I'm Jeff."
"Margaret."
"Nice to meet you. However, I have to go back to work. Enjoy the rest of the cheesecake and if you're still here after I've had served a couple tables, maybe you can vent what made you cry." Jeff stood up and walked away.
I ate the cheesecake slowly. I kept glancing at the glass window hoping that somehow I will see Andrew but there was no Andrew. An hour or two probably had already passed but there was still no Andrew. The cheesecake was already gone and half of the hot chocolate was already cold. A glass of water was placed on my table.
"I see you're still here." Jeff said as he sat across from me once more.
"Ye..." I clenched my jaw with that thought that Andrew didn't come and get me. "The cheesecake was fantastic." I said trying to change the subject.
"I know. Anyways the cafe will be closing soon so how about a slice to go?" He offered.
"Oh no no no. It's fine." I said standing up from my seat and started to head towards the door.
"How about a ride home at least. You sat here all day and I know it was kind of boring." He offered once more.
"Actually maybe I'll catch a taxi or something."
"This is Sitka not New York. I'll give you a lift." He laughed and so did I. I followed him to his car and he started to drive.
"So address?" He asked.
I gave him Andrew's family's house address. He then glanced at me like I spoke gibberish.
"You're staying at Andrew's place?" He asked glancing at me and the road.
"Yeah, he's ... uhm he's my fiancé." I spoke the words with so much hurt.
"You're Margaret. Margaret Tate right?"
I nodded my head and smile.
"Andrew and I used to go to school together. From kindergarten to high school."
"I didn't know that. I didn't much about his school friends or school history." I said looking at him.
"It's something he never really opens up about. Before he went to New York, we would get together and talk about our lives, but when we try to relate them to our high school life, he changes the subject."
"He's a very open person. But things like these I actually don't know about. I guess, there are just things people don't like to talk about with other." I said softly, raising my eyebrows and shrugging my shoulders.
"It was because on graduation night, Gert turned his marriage proposal down."
"Oh." Was all I could spit out.
After the little, he drove in silence until we got to the dock.
"Do you want me to get on the boat with you? Or are you good by yourself?" He asked as he put his car on park.
"Actually I'm fine I can handle it from here but don't you have to cross yourself?"
"I do however, I have to unload my stuff and load it in the boat. It's going to take some time. Andrew's probably looking for you." He said as he owned his door.
"Probably ... probably not." I whispered he wouldn't hear. I watched him walk around the car and open my door for me.
"Well this isn't goodbye. I'll be at the wedding. I mean I'm serving there." He chuckled.
I nodded my head as I inhaled deeply. Of course, the wedding. The wedding that is possible hanging on a very, very thin thread as of this moment.
