Momo sat across from Mina with a piece of crumpled paper caught between her fingers. Her eyebrows furrowed as her midnight eyes scanned the number that lay before her. She knew this number all to well because she had deleted it from her contact many years ago after an...incidnet that she really didn't want to remember at the moment. And yet, Mina, knowing nothing of the incident was currently encouraging her to, well...
"Momo, just hear me out-"
"Awase?" Momo tried not to look disgusted as the name left her lips. She knew that her pink-haired friend was only trying to help, but she couldn't help but be annoyed just by the fact that they were still talking about him. He was one of the many fragments of her shattered past that she didn't want resurfacing in her memory. As much as she had tried, she couldn't get rid of her ex for two years after her sophomore year of high school. It was torture just having to go to class with him after what he did to her.
Of course, though, Mina knew nothing of what he did to her, nor did the freckled girl know anything of the fact that they even dated in high school. Momo hadn't felt the need to key her friends in on that aspect of her life because she didn't want to discuss it. It was a part of her painful memories that she couldn't bear to think about.
"Momo, he's a sweet guy. Okay, so maybe it's not a love connection, but he's perfectly nice and he reached out to me to see if he could get in contact with you and I thought...Well, you've just seemed kind of lonely lately and I think you could benefit from having a sweet guy around," Mina gave her raven-haired friend a sad smile. If only she knew that Momo already had a sweet guy. Better than sweet. But Momo kept that to herself. "I know you played Uno with that fuckboy Shouto, but...I just think it would be good for you to have a constant in your life. We'll always be there when you need us, but we can't be with you all the time...and..."
Momo suppressed some slight anger at her friend's assumption that she needed some sort of baby sitter. HSe was perfectly capable of getting along on her own. Plus, she wasn't even alone. Sure, it was unfair to assume that Mina would know about Todoroki, but it still made her falter a little bit with irritation as she said, "Mina, I don't need a man in my life." Mina looked shocked that Momo would even suggest that was what she was saying. As a hardcore feminist, she was almost offended.
"Of course not! Momo, you never need a man because you're a badass queen. I'm just saying that he's adorable and you deserve someone adorable," Momo wanted to scream that she already had someone adorable. Sure, he wasn't her boyfriend or anything (not that she would mind if he was) but he was her constant already. But she didn't. Instead, she just neatly folded the already ruined piece of paper and pushed it into a deep dark corner of her pocked where she hoped she wouldn't find it again. She had a suspicion that her friend had already done something because normally, Mina wasn't so insistent on things.
"Mina, if you don't mind me asking, why are you pushing this so much? What did you do?" Momo asked warily, her voice cautious even though she was pretty sure she already knew what Mina had done. It was what her friend always did when she thought it would be fun to play matchmaker.
"Okay, so maybe I kind of already told him you would go out with him and gave him a date and time..." Mina guided her eyes away from Momo's face because she knew she would see that classic "I'm really trying not to look like I'm mad at you right now but if I was a more rageful person you'd be feeling it right now" look that was all classically Momo Yaoyorozu.
"And you were planning on telling me this when?" Momo asked, her voice calm but still bordering on angry in a way that sent a cold chill running down Mina's spine. Momo wasn't the kind of person to get mad or to scream when something didn't go the way she wanted, but she could grapple with the best of them when it came to death glares.
"Uhm...haha, uh, Whenever you agreed?" Mina asked sheepishly. She really hadn't thought this part out so well and Momo could see it showing through in her expression which was a mixture between apologetic and fearful. Momo wouldn't lie, she was angry, but she found it hard to be mad at her friend for long despite the fact that Mina had quite literally set her up on a date she didn't even know about until now.
"And if I didn't agree?" Momo crossed her arms indignantly across her chest and leaned back in her chair as she raised an eyebrow and studied Mina with a calculating gaze. Mina shivered under her chilly expression.
"Well, I really thought I could sell you on him before that ever became an issue?" It came out a more of a question than the answer Momo was expecting from her. It wasn't even that Momo disliked that Mina set her up on a date. She actually, believe it or not, appreciated that Mina took a vested interest in her mental health and wanted her to be happy. Momo was upset becuase she actually didn't like Awase in the slightest. Yeah sure, he was a sweet guy, a nice guy, a guy who she caught screwing the head cheerleader in the social studies room one day after school while they were still dating. Okay yeah, maybe he'd changed, but unless he was a time traveler, he couldn't change the past.
Momo was suddenly broken from her reminiscing when Mina said, "Please Momo, just give him a chance, for me. I think you could really like him. And if you don't wanna go on a second date, you can ghost him or delete his number or whatever you want to do, but you'll never know if you like him before you try it..."
Momo saw the validity of her statement. Yeah, may he had changed since then and maybe he was going to apologize, but how could she be sure? She couldn't get her heart broken like that again. It ruined her high school years and she wasn't really willing to go through something like that again. But then again, maybe Mina was right. Maybe she just needed to give him a chance. Maybe she was closing herself off to the world and it was affecting her negatively. Maybe...maybe she just needed o let herself be open for once.
She left the coffee shop that day with her hand fisted around the crumpled piece of paper in her pocket and too many thoughts swimming through her mind. She couldn't catch them all.
