"Can anybody tell me the definition of best friends?" Lando and Mila's Reception teacher, Mrs Davis, sat at the front of the classroom in her chair whilst they were perched on the floor, with their legs crossed, surrounded by their classmates. Lando sat beside Mila proudly, something he did every single day, whilst their hands were locked together. He cherished everything about his best friend and he wanted her to know that. Lando appreciated that she was fragile and he wanted to give her all the love in the world. She deserved nothing less than that.

"When two people love each other as friends!" Daisy, a girl with sleek black hair, sat at the front of the classroom. She was undoubtedly the definition of teacher's pet and it bugged Mila so much. Lando squeezed her hand with a giggle because he knew exactly what was going through her mind. Mila scratched her forehead before playing with her plaited hair. She knew the exact definition of best friends; it was pretty simple to understand when you had the best friend ever.

"I suppose you could say that, Daisy. Well done," Mrs Davis smiled at the small girl before glancing her eyes around the group of children who sat before her with keen ears. They all wanted to know what the definition of best friends was because they were always so intrigued by the discussions they had with their teacher. Everyone but Lando and Mila found interest in the topic of conversation. "Does anybody else have any ideas?"

"Best friends spend all of their time together and they promise not to leave each other behind!" Jackson, who sat at the back of the classroom beside Taylor and Louisa, piped up with his answer, to which Mrs Davis nodded in response, a proud smile on her face. Mila rolled her eyes. She was bored. She wanted to go outside to enjoy the bright sun and sit with her best friend in the school yard. Even though they didn't run around like the other children, as a result of Mila's heart condition, they always sat in the same spot on the grass if the weather permitted, where they talked about anything and everything. Lando understood that Mila was fragile and she couldn't be as active as everyone else in their class, but he didn't mind. He loved spending time with her, and only her, so jealousy was an invalid feeling for him.

"Lando and Mila are best friends!" Poppy-Rose lifted her arm into the air and waved her hand above her head to capture Mrs Davis' attention. The fair haired girl was sitting close to Mila, a smile plastered on her face as she sported pristine pigtails. Mila felt her cheeks turn red as Lando squeezed her hand before she buried her face into the crook of her best friend's neck. She was embarrassed, even though she knew it was true. Lando was Mila's best friend. Mila was Lando's best friend.

"Lando, what is your definition of a best friend?" Mrs Davis smiled at both Lando and Mila, admiring how cute they were when they were together. Even she knew how inseparable they were. Lando remained quiet for a moment as he thought about his answer before looking at Mila with the proudest grin on his face.

"A best friend is someone you can count on all of the time, someone who will always be there for you even if you make silly mistakes," his words caused Mila to look at him shyly, a smile poking through on her face as her dimples lifted carefully. "Having a best friend means that you will never be alone and that you will always be so happy. They help you through everything and love and appreciate you for the person you are."

"That's very sweet, Lando," Mrs Davis smiled at the young boy who nodded his head as he proudly held onto Mila's hand. He loved showing her off and ensuring that everybody knew that he already had his best friend. He wasn't losing Mila for anyone. "And Mila, what's your definition of a best friend?"
