Rift baby

Jack rushed through the hub "IANTO" he bellowed. The Welshman looked up "yes sir?" He barely had time to enquire before jack cut back in, "hold this" he said hurriedly shoving a baby into Ianto's arms ... A BABY?! He followed jack into his office "who's child did you kidnap this time jack?" He sighed, jack laughed soon falling silent when he spotted Ianto blank expression "oh you're being serious... no ones... it fell through the rift". Ianto's eyes widened "so it's a ... alien ...baby?" He stated holding the child at arms length. Jack shrugged "maybe ... or from an alternate universe... need to get Owen to do a dna test when he comes in". Ianto sighed shifting the baby on his hip "so that'll be in three hours or a year..." he muttered under his breath as he left the room.

"You... stay there" he told the child seriously, placing it in the sink for safe keeping as he made the coffee. A moment later tosh appeared in the doorway "don't mind me..." she began "just getting a glass of water". Ianto waved a hand behind him "sure sure... just don't drown the rift baby" he informed her turning towards the baby... or rather where the baby had been, "shit" he hissed as he glanced around the kitchen. "Watch the coffee will you... I need to go find a possible alien child before it ... I don't know eats the sofa or whatever kids do". He rushed into the main hub, relieved to find the child sat happily on the floor clapping its hands as it watched the hand in a jar jack insisted on keeping. "You ... are a menace, rift baby" ianto scolded as he lifted the child off of the floor. His lips quirked into a small smile as the child giggled, but he would never admit that ... not yet at least. "Ianto!" Owen exclaimed "jack needs me to see if the child's human".

The child sat on Ianto's lap as Owen took the blood from the child's arm with a small needle. "All done" he announces as he placed a small sticky plaster on the needle prick. "They need changing" the medic informed ianto, the Welshman quirked an eyebrow and Owen raised his hands "I'm not doing it!" He exclaimed. Ianto groaned "worth a try" he muttered as he carted himself and the baby from the room. "At least I'll get to find out if you're a girl or a boy..." he told the baby as he delved into the bag of baby things jack had bought earlier on. "Well you're a girl" he informed the child "if you're human, that is". He distracted her with a plastic toy flower as he changed her. "All finished" he smiled at her tucking the fake flower behind his ear absentmindedly.

The pizza arrived for lunch, ianto sat in the kitchen as he prepared the baby food for the baby. "Alright rift baby..." he began as he stirred the baby food. "Rift baby? ... I feel like I should give you a name.... how aboouuuuttt Alys?" The baby giggled, ianto took this as a good sign "alright then Alys... time for your lunch."

Owen confirmed the baby's human heritage after lunch. "So .... just from an alternate universe then" jack confirmed as they stared at the baby, "I guess we should put her up for adoption then". Ianto's eyes widened "NO!" He exclaimed, horrified. The team turned towards him with a mixture of shock and amusement as he pulled Alys onto his lap when she began fussing. "Alriiight" jack said slowly "we'll have to get paper work written up... can't just have a baby appear from no where" he told the team as they began to leave the meeting room.

Jack went to find ianto, who had disappeared into the archives with Alys, to his surprise as he entered the archives he heard singing. "Hush little baby don't say a word, dada's gonna buy you a mocking bird. And if that mocking bird don't sing, dada's gonna buy you a diamond ring and if that diamond ring turns brass dada's gonna buy you a looking glass" ianto sing softly rocking Alys back and forth. "Dada huh?" Jack smirked slightly as ianto jumped. "Jack!" He exclaimed in a whisper as Alys slept in his arms "I was just uhhh..." he trailed off, he was about to launch into an explanation but jack was shaking his head... to silence him perhaps?

Jack made his way over and sat beside ianto "yanno" he began "we're going to have to make fake adoption papers... so people don't question... I was thinking maybe... only if you want... we could ... put both our names on it" he suggested. Ianto gaped slightly "s-so like... we would both be ... the dads..." he clarified. Jack kissed Ianto softly on his forehead "yeah... if that's what you want", ianto nodded ... he did want that ... very much.

————— fifteen years later —————

"TAD IM GOING OUT" Alys called from the door. Ianto appeared in the doorway, quirking an eyebrow "who with" he questioned slightly suspiciously. He noted the way Alys fidgeted "my... boyfriend..." she admitted... and then she was out the door leaving ianto gaping in the hallway. He rushed into the kitchen "SHES GOT A BOYFRIEND" he exploded. Jack looked up from his toast "yeah I know" he replied with his mouth full. "You knew about this?!" Ianto exclaimed incredulously. Jack smiled "she didn't tell you because she knew you'd over react.... she's nearly sixteen... she's growing up love". Ianto pouted "feels like she fell out the rift practically yesterday..." he grumbled as he sank down into a chair.

He wasn't actually mad at his daughter having a boyfriend. He loved being a dad. He hadn't realised how much he wanted to be a dad until he met Alys. You see, the rift brings in aliens and wonders but sometimes... very rarely... it brings miracles.
