Farkle was wrapped in his comforter, feeling like a human burrito. He needed something familiar in times of change and his soft cotton sheets warm against his skin was definitely familiar. He needed time to process what was going on between his parents and what better way to do that then lie in your bed and procrastinate all day long until time disappears.
He brought his hand up to sweep his mouse-y brown hair off of his face, yet he'd paused once he'd realised he was shaking. He'd not eaten all day. He did this often when he became lost in his thoughts. However, it was now 4pm and he wasn't sure he'd be able to make it to the kitchen without passing out.
Just as he was about to get up, he heard someone knock on his bedroom door - It was his friends. He inwardly grunted, cursing himself for forgetting to text them and say not to come over for a few days.
He immediately saw the look of worry on Maya and Riley's faces at his depressed-like state. Maya saw the bags under his eyes and how tired he looked, "Farkle, what's going on."
Maya wasn't asking, she was demanding a response. There was no arguing with her. So, he chose the best course of action, he avoided.
"Hey guys, sorry I missed school but I'm not feeling too great and I don't want you guys to see me like this. Thanks for checking up on me but I think you should go." He settled back into his position in his bed.
"Well, Farkle, why didn't you just say so. We can look after you and make you feel better." Riley suggested, walking toward him.
"NO!" Farkle said a bit too loud. This sparked Maya's curiosity as she could clearly tell he was hiding something from them. Watching as her friends said their goodbyes and their well-wishes, she realised she was the only one who had noticed this.
Playing along, Maya also said goodbye and left the room. Before the front door had closed, Maya decided to investigate. "Hey guys, you know what, I actually have to speak to Farkle about something so I'll catch you later." She waved and quickly went back inside. She waited a few seconds, loudly closing the door to let Farkle know they had left.
Farkle walked out of his room, looking tired and a bit sad, into his kitchen. Opening his fridge, he grabbed a carton of milk and set it down on his sleek, black counter and shut the door. Maya watched him obliviously going about as normal.
He didn't look sick, just sad.
He grabbed a glass from another cupboard. Feeling eyes on him, he turned around to see Maya with her back against the front door and her eyebrow raised. "Great." Farkle said under his breath, he knew he was in trouble. He set down the glass and leaned back on the counter, bracing himself.
"Care to explain why you lied to us?" She slowly walked towards Farkle. "Because you look tired, but you clearly aren't sick. And I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have been so quick to push us out of your house unless you're hiding something."
