Running all over the city, Farkle started to feel his heart rate pick up. He'd been looking for an hour now and he still couldn't find Maya. He'd gone to her house, the bay window and even her mom's work.
He couldn't find her anywhere. His phone was close to dying so Farkle thought it best to go home, charge up and head back out on the hunt again.
He texted Lucas to let him know what he was doing.
With all of this drama, Farkle had forgotten that it was his birthday. He wasn't surprised to see that everyone else had too. No text from his dad, his mum had promised him a meal out and his friends had other things to worry about.
He had other things to worry about.
Maya.Farkle knew that the first thing he was going to do when he found her was apologise for acting out against her dad. It was his fault that she'd ran away, he'd never been so defensive so quickly, even when he was getting bullied.
He marched home with his fists balled. He needed to find her.
He'd started to lose hope of anyone finding her until morning. Maya was very good at not being found unless she wanted to be.
Farkle was almost home now, walking up the dimly lit staircase leading to his apartment. He checked his phone one last time for any updates before it completely died.
He rummaged through the bottom of his jeans pocket past some chewing gum and an old receipt to find his keys. He was almost at his door.
"Farkle?" his eyes lit up at her voice.
He lifted his head to see Maya sitting, curled into a tight ball near Farkles front door. She was shivering and her eyes were half closed, she looked a bit out of it. Her red cheeks were covered in tears mixed with mascara. She was a mess.
Farkle ran to her and held her in a tight embrace. She let out soft sobs as she tried to get some of his body heat.
He quickly used his keys to open the front door, swinging it open and chucking the keys on the sofa.
He put one arm under Maya's legs and the other on her back. Farkle swept her up and carried her inside, using his food to kick the door shut.
Her weeps quieted as she hugged closer into Farkle, she was so caught up in her emotions that she hadn't fully realised he'd picked her up at all.
He set down her frail body on his bed and raced over to his closet, plucking out yet another hoodie for Maya. It was a dark green shade, its inside coated with fluff. It was the warmest hoodie Farkle owned. He walked back over to Maya, lifting her arms and covering her with the thick material. Maya could only stare at Farkle, fascinated with his tenderness.
As he pulled the hood over her head, he stared back. Sympathy clear in his eyes, scanning the long tear stains that adorned her face. He knelt on the space in front of Maya, moving his head down. His thick hair fell over his face, distorting her view of him.
"Maya... I am so sor-" Farkle was cut off. Maya, without thinking, had taken his face in her hands and leaned in, kissing him. It wasn't rough or passionate but soft and loving.
She pulled back all too soon leaving Farkle stunned. She looked deep into his eyes, not moving her hands.
"Thank you, Farkle."
And that was when Farkle realised, that was the best birthday present ever.
