Farkle began to stir when he felt an empty space next to him. He'd expected to wake up with Maya, maybe take her out for some coffee and walk her home. Instead, he woke up in a cold, empty bed. No note, nothing.
She probably just had to go home, he thought.
Farkle went about his sunday as usual, texting Lucas every now and then, forgetting about the rest of his problems.
If only there was someone around to notice the spring in his step and the grin he had.
That grin was quickly wiped from his face as he appeared at school the next day to see Maya immediately walk in the opposite direction. He frowned. She left Riley standing on her own.
He'd been so excited to get to school and speak to her, or ever just be around her. Just knowing that she was there made him feel better. Instead, he went to class still missing her and the stillness that she brought to his racing thoughts.
Farkle had attempted to speak to Maya multiple times that day, each time she only stood up and walked away. The worst thing was that Farkle didn't know why she was avoiding him. It was like a punch to the gut. She didn't want to be around him.
Was he so awful that she could no longer stand his presence? He'd finally let her in - it was like she took everything he had, filled him up with thoughts of her and left without a second thought.
She consumed him. Farkle squinted his eyes, feeling betrayed. There had to be a reason for this.
Meanwhile, Riley had been abandoned in the middle of the hallway by Maya again. Riley wasn't going to be left behind again though. She scrambled her books together and raced after her, she was away on a march.
"Okay Maya, pumpkin, you gotta tell me what's going on between you and Farkle. I am not going to put up with you too avoiding each other all year." Riley sympathised.
Maya sighed, "Listen, Riles. I know you just wanna help but there's nothing you can do about this one. I'm sorry, sunshine."
Riley was determined though, "Bay window, bay window right in 3 hours."
"No."
"Yes."
"No."
"Fine, then I'll go ask Farkle instead."
"No- wait, RILEY!" But Riley was already running in the other direction.
"Hey, Farkle!! Farkle over here!" She reached him, breathless. "Bay window, bay window right in 3 hours."
"Do I have a choice?" He quizzed.
"Not really." She smiled, finally getting somewhere.
