Awkward intimacy

Within an hour, Farkle had poured his heart out. There was nothing left for him to say.

Maya spoke through sobs, she had much more to say than Farkle did. She had years of abandonment issues she'd never spoken about. Most of which, Farkle had never even thought of, he wanted nothing more than to take away all of her pain.

She'd put up her walls a long time ago. Although many may have thought that her walls were down now, Farkle was afraid that he was only peaking through the cracks.

He promised himself he'd break through those cracks and always be there for her.

"Maya, I am so, so sorry that you had to go through all of this alone. I've tried doing it on my own for two weeks and I crumbled." He took her hands in his. "You are the strongest woman I have ever met in my entire life."

Farkle looked into Maya's eyes with an intensity she had never seen before. It scared her.
She kept eye contact for a few seconds before letting out an awkward laugh and looking away, wiping her tears from her cheeks.

"Well, that's enough of that." she said, trying to change the subject. He nodded.

"Yeah.. um. Food? Movie? Nap? We should probably do something other than cry." he laughed at his suggestions. "Take your pick."

Farkle lifted his arm, scratching the back of his head. Maya turned just in time to catch this action, noticing his muscles flex beneath his grey shirt.  She whipped her head away, immediately feeling her cheeks redden.

Farkle followed her line of sight to his muscles and promptly shot his arm back down. His own cheeks reddened from embarrassment.

They'd never felt this strange awkwardness between them before. In only these last few hours had they become somehow closer, with sudden moments of intimacy.

Since Farkle had first collapsed, Maya couldn't get the image of him lying there like that out of her head. She continuously noticed small things about her friend that she'd never seen before, like the way his hair falls just shy of his eyes, or the way he sighs and stretches his arms backward when he doesn't know what to do.

It was an odd new feeling of admiration awakening inside of her for Farkle.

She wasn't the only one. Farkle had begun noticing how her eyes glinted with mischief right before she's about to do something evil, or how she played with his hair with such fascination. Little did they know that this would be the start of something beautifully tragic.

Farkle decided before Maya, they would watch a movie to get their mind off of their daddy issues.

He picked ZombieLand presuming it would satisfy Maya's thirst for chaos and comedy. Putting it on Farkle's tv, they settled down on opposite sides of the bed to watch the movie.

Farkle was somehow surprised at how hard Maya laughed at the gorey scenes. She had a truly terrifying sense of humour.

Once the movie was finished, Farkle turned to Maya only to see a great big goofy smile. It was beautiful. A genuine smile. It was contagious, Farkle sat gazing at her for what felt like an eternity.

Oh, shit, wait what. He snapped out of his daydream, shaking his head.

"You okay?" Maya held a concerned look, she had also promised herself to be there for him - no matter the situation.

"Yeah," he let out a soft breath, "shouldn't you be getting home?" Maya looked at her phone in response. It was almost midnight. She almost began to panic thinking of her mom before remembering that her mom was working a late shift at the diner and wouldn't notice if Maya stayed out all night.

"Probably, yeah." She sat up off of his bed, preparing herself for the oncoming cold of the night - Maya hadn't taken a jacket and she'd be sitting on the subway for a while.

"Okay, well I'll walk you to the door then. Where'd you put your coat?"

"Oh, I didn't take one. I didn't think I'd need one. " She looked out of Farkle's window, dreading going home in the cold.

Farkle disappeared for a second and reappeared with one of his hoodies, smiling the entire time. "Are you aware that once I put this on, you aren't getting it back? Right?"

"Noted."
