"You're an evil woman, Maya Hart." He was gaping at her, slowly moving backwards to the other end of the sofa, away from her.
She giggled at his fear. "Well, my dear Farkle, I was gonna make you some toast but then I looked down at my baby and we looked into eachothers eyes," *and she does the 🥺 emoji* ",and I just couldn't give you my baby because you wouldn't treat her right."
Maya immediately clamped her hand over her mouth, cursing herself. Everyone knew that Farkle was sensitive when it came to talk of his ability to treat people right. He had always worried that he'd grow up to be just like his father - near emotionless and uncaring for others feelings. He became terrified of it when he had the autism test. He never wanted to forget how to love, how to care.
This was why it was difficult for him to be affectionate around Smackle. Although she was the same, she never understood why he tried so hard to feel like everyone else. It was a sensitive subject now. Farkle cast his eyes down and stood up, taking the plate from Maya and walking to the kitchen.
"Farkle... I-"
"It's fine, Maya. Don't worry about it. You were just joking, right? Yeah, you and everyone else..." He muttered the last bit.
He could hear Maya stand and walk towards him. Just as he was about to turn around, two arms snaked around his thin torso. His head fell as he used his arms to hold himself up against the counter with Maya latched onto his back.
She heard a soft drop hit the hard surface, followed by several more. She could feel Farkle crying, she could feel his pain.
She loosened her arms around his waist to turn him and give him a proper hug. He threw his arms around her, holding on so tight she thought she would snap in half.
She didn't dare to move, not until he was ready.
Farkle stood leaning down, sobbing into Maya's shoulder for 10 minutes before any words were spoken. "What if I never learn to love, Maya? What if I become almost emotionless like my dad?" He began to loosen his grip, walking back towards his room. Maya followed.
"Is that what this is about? You're afraid you'll lose your feelings? Farkle, not only are you one of the smartest people I know, but also one of the most compassionate and caring people I have ever met in my life. Don't let what you're afraid of beat you down." she pleaded for him to listen to her words, to understand them.
