~ Gabriella's POV ~
"So..."
Matteo cracked a small smile when I mimicked him.
"Where do we start?" He rose an eyebrow at me before he looked down at the ground in front of him as we walked.
"The beginning?"
Well I could have said that.
"Right so from Adam and Eve then?" Matteo rolled his eyes at my sarcasm, letting out a low chuckle.
"I'm sorry we had to cut the vacation short. It was just terrible planning on my part. I also probably should have worked a little less-"
"Probably?" I rose an eyebrow at him.
"Fine, yes, I should have. So I'm sorry about that." I nodded my head in agreement before I spoke. "I've already apologised for slapping you, but I'll say it again - I really am sorry. I'm also sorry for dancing with Alex, I didn't know you didn't like him."
"It's more than just a dislike Gabriella. I've never hated someone as much as I hate him. But that's a story for another time." I could instantly tell from the tone of his voice he was trying not to let his anger rise when we spoke about Alex.
"Why did you make me go to that gala? You know I don't get on with most of your family."
As soon as I mentioned his family he let out a sigh next to me.
"We need to talk about that Gabriella. Look, I know my family aren't perfect, they're far from it, but they are my family and I only have one. I know you have your differences with Carlotta but that day you left-"
Before he could even finish his sentence I'd already cut him off without waiting to hear what he was going to say.
"If you're going to ask me to give her a chance the answer will always be no. She turned up the salon again yesterday Matteo." I could tell he wasn't happy with me cutting him off, but what I said seemed to concern him more in that moment.
"She did? What did she say?"
"Oh you know, the usual 'I'm not good enough for you' bullshit." I let out a scoff as I shook my head, thinking about what she said to me. "I've always told you to make sure you have a good relationship with your family Matteo, but Carlotta I just...I don't like her. I don't want her to have a place in my life."
"What are you trying to say?" Now his tone was defensive. I let out a sigh, breathing in the fresh air as we continued to walk, passing by numerous fields.
"I don't know how happy I would be with her having a place in our child's life." The second the words came out of my mouth, like it was exactly what he expected me to say, Matteo shook his head.
"You can't do that Gabriella. She's my sister."
"Yes, she's your sister who hasn't once congratulated me on my pregnancy. She's your sister who told me I'm not good enough for you, that you're only with me because you miss Mia."
When I said this, Matteo let out a dry chuckle before he groaned.
"I never asked to be caught in the middle of this Gabriella."
"And you think I did? Matteo I never did anything to her! She was just an acquaintance to me. I did her hair a few times, that's it, but for some reason she hates me."
Matteo fell silent for a moment, the only sound around us was the soft breeze and the sound of the ground beneath our feet as we walked.
"I don't want to argue with you over this. She's my sister, no matter what she does she'll always be my sister and I only have one left. We started treating Mia badly after she made some bad decisions and she died because of it. Nothing is worth going through that again."
