In those twenty minutes we shared a table, I had the chance to get to know Keith a little better. I learnt that he would turn eighteen soon, and he also talked about his family and his brother, Shiro, who was 24 years old. He told me about his favorite books and that he wasn't too fond of sports.
When he started asking me questions, I answered every single one of them happily, being completely aware that both his and my friends were staring at us. Probably, when Keith went back to his friends they would ask a lot of questions. Mine will just tease me endlessly about it. I don't really mind.
The bell rang, and I was a bit upset that I had to say goodbye.
"Bye, Lance" Keith said, getting up from his chair.
"See you later" I replied.
"As you wish" he smiled and I smiled back, as I joined my friends on their way to PE class.
I put on my black and blue tracksuit in the locker room and stepped into the gymnasium.
"Okay, weaklings!" the coach yelled "today's soccer, so get out there!"
Great. I. Hate. Soccer. I approached the coach with my best fake smile and tried to change his mind.
"Coach, I'd rather play basketball..." I started.
"No, McClain. Now go and join your classmates" he blew into his whistle, producing a loud whirring sound "today's soccer."
I sighed. This man hates me ever since the first day of school, when he found out I don't really like team sports. I joined Hunk and Pidge next to the gym doors and we started running around the field as a warm up, just like we do every day. After a while, I noticed Keith was sitting in a bench with a few of his friends. He had a sketchbook and he moved a pencil furiously, probably drawing something. He wasn't paying attention to his friends. A very tall girl tried to talk to him, and when we were closer I could see how he waved his hand at her, as if saying 'not now'.
I must have been too focused on that, because Pidge punched my arm.
"Ouch!" I said. Pidge might look small, but she was strong.
"What were you looking at, huh?"
"Nothing" I lied, obviously.
Pidge looked in the direction I was looking before as we kept running.
"Isn't that the boy with whom you sat today?" she teased.
"Yeah" now I was starting to feel bothered.
"May I ask how do you know him?"
"You may not" I immediately answered, clearly bothered now.
"Dude, you need to learn to look discretely, you're not achieving anything like this" she laughed. "Who is he?"
"Keith" I replied. "He's almost eighteen."
The coach saw us chatting and yelled into his megaphone.
"McClain! Holt! Garrett! Shut up and run faster!"
I sped up, passing the idiots I fortunately have as my friends.
That afternoon I had to go to the bookstore, but I loved my job so it wasn't really a problem. When I got there Mrs. Smith was already there, and she smiled at me fondly.
"Somebody's waiting for you" she told me.
"For me?" weird, the store just opened and there was already someone there. "Who is it?"
She moved her head towards a table in the back, where Keith was reading.
"Go on, you can rest this afternoon" she smiled again "There's not too much work today and I can take it."
"Thank you, Mrs. Smith" I said, stepping away from her desk.
"You came to see me?" I asked him.
He closed his book and got up to look at me in the eyes.
"Yeah, I didn't have anything to do today. I hope I'm not bothering"
"Oh no, don't worry. My WONDERFUL boss" I said, rising my voice so she could hear it "gave me a day off, so we could talk or read together for a while, maybe, if you feel like it."
"Awesome!" He replied, which made me really happy.
I'm sure Mrs. Smith ended up regretting her decision because, soon after, Keith and I engaged in a debate about which side was better in a book the both of us had read and, of course, we didn't have the same opinion. But it was fun.
When I finally managed to stop laughing about some foolish thing he said, I asked him if he wanted to go for a walk, because the bookstore would close soon. He agreed, so we went out.
"Time flew by. I liked it" he said, when we arrived to a park.
"Me too. Even if we're enemies according to the book."
"I don't see how that would interfere" Keith replied "If they had thought about it more, they would have avoided a huge war" he proceeded to explain his point.
"Argh, you're too clever, stop making points I can't argue about!"
"Doesn't take much intelligence to reach that conclusion" he teased.
"Hey! Are you saying I'm dumb?"
Keith laughed, and I couldn't help but laugh too.
