As far as they know, Allura, Coran, Romelle and Lance are the only Alteans left in the universe. Coran was the only one old enough to understand what had happened in the previous war and that's what he told the rest, but they didn't lose hope. Lance could pilot a lion, they just had to find four other paladins to form Voltron and be able to do something. Anything.
The castle of lions was old, but its tech was not outdated. Allura and Coran worked nonstop to make it functional, and Lance and Romelle searched different planets in hopes of finding war survivors, resources, perhaps even allies. At this point, pretty much anything would be helpful against the Galra, anything but running away.
A certain day, Allura told Lance she wanted to speak to him privately, so they met long after their crewmates had gone to sleep.
"Tomorrow morning" Allura said "I need you to take Romelle and find us a Balmera crystal."
Lance nodded, wondering why would she want to have this conversation in private. She seemed to read his face like an open book.
"I haven't told them" she added "but we desperately need a new power source or we'll be stuck here. It's serious."
Lance's eyes widened in shock. Is it that bad? he asked himself. If she asked me like this, it must be.
"I trust you on this, Lance."
"I will get you that crystal" he promised.
In the morning, Lance explained the situation to Romelle but he didn't mention how urgent it was, Allura wanted him to keep quiet and he didn't want to put pressure on Romelle. And if Coran knew, he would freak out.
They both left on the blue lion, and Lance hoped they wouldn't have any trouble in Balmera, but they wouldn't be so lucky.
They hadn't even stepped outside of the lion when they heard a horrendous screech, but they couldn't see anything. They didn't know if there were still Balmerans on the planet, but if they were they seemed to be hiding. A second screech startled him.
"Romelle, this might be dangerous, do you have your weapon ready?" he asked his friend. She nodded.
They followed the loud crashes and screeches until they arrived to a clearing. There, right in the middle, a small battle had erupted, and Lance hid behind a rock to analyze the situation.
The thing that made those horrible sounds looked like a huge bear, but after another attack it turned into a giant slimy beast, and then, it changed into a creature so terrifying Lance didn't even have the words to describe it.
"Romelle, there's people fighting, I need to help."
She knew better than to try to change his mind, so she agreed. "I will go look for the crystal, we'll meet back at the castle."
They hugged and promised each other they would come back safe.
Still fighting the beast, a young guy tried everything to defeat it, but it wasn't working. When he launched forward with his sword, Lance could see his face and he stared in surprise: the boy was Galra. He was tall and buff, and Lance could tell he was also very powerful and skilled with a sword.
But without giving it a second thought, Lance still jumped in to help him. He activated his bayard and stepped into the battlefield.
"HEY, UGLY" he yelled at the beast. "YOU'RE ABOUT TO KNOW WHY THEY CALL ME SHARPSHOOTER."
The Galra was distracted by the sudden yelling and fell, staying right under he the beast's sharp teeth. Lance started shooting, which confused the monster because it hadn't realized a new opponent had appeared. In that precise moment, a second Galra (who was even taller than the first one) jumped behind it and stabbed it in the back. The creature shifted to a worm-like creature, and then back to bear before turning to dust.
The tall Galra fell down, and only then Lance noticed he was badly injured. He was going to approach him and help him when he was knocked down to the ground.
A sharp blade rested against his neck and bright yellow eyes stared down at him, in anger.
"What are you? Another one of them?" the boy asked, still pinning Lance down roughly.
"What?" Lance replied, offended. "Do you seriously think I look like one of those?"
"That was a shapeshifter, you idiot. It could look like you do now. And my friend is hurt, so how do I know I can trust you?"
"How do I know I can trust you?" he said, and then kept talking when the Galra didn't respond "you're a Galra! You're the bad guys!"
The boy sighed, stopped putting pressure on the blade and set it aside, but he didn't let Lance go.
"I'm half Galra, same as my friend over there. And we're not evil, we're part of the rebellion." he finally answered.
Wait, rebellion? Lance thought.
"Me too!" Lance exclaimed. "I'm Altean. I came here with a friend in hopes of finding a Balmeran crystal for our ship."
He thought the boy was going to let him go, that they would shake hands and be rebellion buddies, but that didn't happen. The Galra kept looking back at his friend, still not sure if Lance was dangerous or not, but worried he needed help.
Lance placed a hand on his shoulder.
"You know, we can help him. Our ship has healing pods, if you let me go you can follow me there and we'll help him" he said.
The boy finally loosened his grip a little.
"What's your name?" Lance asked.
"Keith" the boy replied, hesitantly.
"I'm Lance."
"How do I know I can trust you, Lance?" he said again.
Lance grabbed Keith's hand and made him rest it on his chest, right over his heart. Then, he closed his eyes, breathing deeply.
Keith didn't know what was happening, but he blushed when he felt Lance's heartbeat. On Lance's cheeks, a couple of pink marks started to glow up and, somehow, he knew Lance was on his side, and he helped him get up.
Keith's ship had been crushed by the beast, so they carried the other Galra (who according to Keith was named Lotor) to the blue lion. Thankfully, Romelle was already there with the crystal, not surprised that Lance had been able to make friends.
"Wait" Keith gasped when he saw the lion. "Are you a paladin of Voltron?"
Lance smiled fondly at him, and their hands brushed when they sat Lotor down.
"There's no Voltron yet, but I pilot this beauty."
Those gorgeous yellow eyes stared back at him, and he couldn't look away.
"I think Red will like you" Lance added "you should find out."
And after another pause, he spoke again.
"Stay with me."
