Immediately after seeing my reaction, Keith grabbed the phone from my hands and read the name on the screen.
"Allura" he said carefully "Who's Allura?"
That was the only thing about my life that I hadn't told him, but it was about time.
"I know her" I said.
"Do you?"
"Yes, uh... she's on my class" Keith looked at me as if saying anything else? "I had a huge crush on her for three years, but she basically ignores my existence."
I don't know why I said I had a crush on her. As far as I knew, I was still attracted to her, but I was beginning to lose interest.
"Oh. But why would she call James? And why would he rush to leave?" Keith wondered.
"No idea. But hey, don't worry. Word is Allura has a boyfriend."
"Yeah... I'll give James his phone back and I'll talk to him. Don't tell my parents tho, or Shiro, please."
"You know I won't" I promised.
"That's why you're my best friend" he smiled as he grabbed my hand and pulled me inside.

When we got into the house, his parents and Shiro were all sitting on the couch laughing at the TV.
"Where's James, son?" Krolia asked.
"Huh..." Keith said, visibly thinking of an excuse.
"He got a call from his mom, family issue, but nothing serious."
Keith thanked me silently and I smiled at him, still holding his hand.

"Did you talk to James?" I asked Keith the next day, during lunch.
"Yeah. Turns out Allura is dating his cousin, and he called to tell him his cousin had gotten injured and they were heading to the emergency room. Few stitches, he's okay"
"Oh"
That day Keith sat with me, which made me happy. But happiness didn't last long. James came into the cafeteria half an hour later and he got mad when he saw us together.
"What are you doing with him?" James shouted.
"Calm down, James" Keith responded, very calmly.
"Are you cheating on me?"
I laughed, which only made him angrier, but Keith spoke again.
"What are you talking about? You know he's my best friend, just that"
"Yeah" I said "Besides, I have a girlfriend, so don't worry."
I noticed how some of my friends looked at me from nearby tables, but only Keith knew I was lying. I would have told him.
"Hm. Fine."
Bur still, he dragged Keith to another table.
Protective my ass, I thought. I would say jealous, selfish, even asshole.

The big issue arrived a couple of weeks later, when the picture perfect James pulled out an excuse to leave and I had to open my big mouth.
"Do you seriously believe him?" I asked. I think it may have sounded more rude than I intended.
"Of course I do, he's my boyfriend" Keith said, as if that justified it.
"That was a pathetic excuse, to be honest" I argued.
"That's none of your business, Lance" I could tell he was angry.
"Keith, open your eyes! He's not treating you nicely!"
"Neither are you! You're supposed to be my best friend, have some faith in me."
"I trust you, but not him!" I told him, trying not to raise my voice. "He's stood you up plenty of timess"
Why the hell didn't I shut up. I could have avoided this.
"I chose to date him!"
"Well, looks like you can't make a good choice."
He stopped a tear running down his cheek and looked at me.
"Looks like I can't. Not even for friendships."

Well, guys. I did say it was gonna get angsty. At least you got a bit of hand holding. Still, I'm sorry, but I promise it will get better.
Regarding James, I do have something to say. I'm aware that this one shot makes him look like a bad guy. He's kind of a bad guy in here, but I actually love the original character. As I've mentioned before, this is an old story of mine turned into a kl au, so I needed vld characters to fill certain roles. That does not mean I don't like James :)
Fun fact: the names of my og characters for this story were Jack (Lance), Katie (Keith), Eros (James), Mai (Rachel), Rachel (Allura), Ethan (Pidge), Connor (Hunk), Elizabeth (Veronica), Dahlia (Krolia) and Lukas (Shiro).
Any questions, theories, anything? Leave it in the comment section, I love reading your thoughts and replying to you.
