(Lance's POV)
My favorite coffee shop is down the street, two minutes away from my house. This is a good thing, because I live for coffee, but it's also bad because I end up spending more money than I'd want to.
More good things: my best friend Hunk works there, so Pidge and I always do our homework at the coffee shop. Keith works there as well, but I don't really know him. I know his older brother, tho: Shiro is friends with Matt, Pidge's brother.
Today it's raining a lot. It has been raining all day, but not too much for school to be canceled.
It's cold and we had a tough week at school, so Pidge and I agreed to meet at the coffee shop and drown our stress in caffeine (which is probably not the best idea, actually). And since I never seem to have good ideas, I left my house without an umbrella. Of course, the two minutes from my house to the coffee shop are more than enough to soak me till I'm dripping.
"Hunk, please" I say, when I open the door to the shop. "I'm gonna need a coffee, boiling hot, I'm soaked and freezing."
The few customers present send sad looks my way.
"I can see that, buddy" Hunk says, pity in his voice. "Right away."
While I wait for my order, I get a text from Pidge: it's raining too much for her to leave the house, she can't come today.
"Lance!" Hunk calls me from the counter. I approach him. He hands me a key. "There's an extra shirt in my locker, do you wanna change? You're still dripping."
"You're a blessing, Hunk. Thank you" I take the key and walk through the staff door.
The shirt is a uniform shirt and it's too big for me. I don't mind, it's better than wearing wet clothes. I hang my shirt and quickly change. I feel better instantly.
My drink is ready when I come out. French vanilla coffee with whipped cream and cinnamon, as always. I sit by the counter so I can chat with Hunk while I have my coffee.
When I finish my drink, Hunk's shift is coming to an end, but the roads are difficult to drive through so Keith is coming in late. Hunk covers for him.
A tall, white-haired girl comes in, sees me in this uniform and asks me to please take her order.
"Sorry, Allura" I know her from school "I don't work here" I excuse myself.
Then, a bunch of customers come in. They must be taking shelter from the cold rain outside.
"Actually, buddy, do you mind helping me? Keith's still not here and there's a lot of clients now" Hunk asks me.
"Sure, no problem." I'm glad to help, Hunk always does so much for me, it feels good to return the favor.
Hunk and I start taking orders like crazy, doing our best to satisfy every customer. Then, Hunk has to leave to help his mom with his little siblings.
"It's okay, Hunk, I can manage this until Keith gets here. I'm sure he won't take long" I smile so he doesn't feel guilty. It's really okay, I can deal with the shop for a bit with no problem. When Keith arrives, every customer has been served and I'm cleaning the counter.
"McClain" he says. "Stealing my job from me, I see?"
We're not really friends, but he's friendly towards me. I take off my apron and hand it to him.
"Just covering for you" I answer "Hunk had to leave. I'm glad you got here safely."
"The roads are a mess. And thank you."
"No problem."
I go get my backpack, but Keith calls me.
"Hey Lance, do you have to leave? I could actually use your help, if that's okay" he tells me.
I leave my backpack where it was. "I can stay" and I smile at him.Keith and I work together the rest of the afternoon, I take orders and he makes the drinks.
"We made it, were a good team" I tell him, when the last client leaves. We fist-bump.
"You did well, it's like you've been doing this for months."
I laugh.
"That's because I spend a lot of time in here."
We clean up and head towards the staff room together. When I go pick up my shirt, I notice it's still wet.
Keith approaches me from behind.
"You can't go out like that, it's still raining a lot."
"It's okay, I live two minutes away from here."
"Still, it's cold" he says. "Here, you can wear my sweatshirt."
He hands me a red sweatshirt and our hands brush against each other. His hand lingers there for a moment. I take the sweatshirt.
"Thanks, man."
He nods and waits for me beside the counter while I get changed. When I'm done and join him, he hands me a coffee cup.
"For you" he says. "I know you like French vanilla. It'll keep you warm on your way home."
How does he know this? I blush, and thank him as I smile.
We say goodbye and go our separate ways. I run home to avoid the rain as much as possible, and then go straight to my room. I get in bed without taking off the sweatshirt, it smells like lavender, just like Keith. I drink the coffee and warm up quickly.
And then I notice it.
Keith's number. Written on my coffee cup.
