Standing in front of the mirror I thought I looked weird. Within the hour, I had to be at Keith's for dinner with his family and his stupid boyfriend.
Stop it, I told myself. You don't even know him. You have no right to behave like this.
I put on a pair of dark jeans and a red flannel shirt. Not really my style, but I figured Keith would like it. Then, I tried to brush my mesy hair and I grabbed the little box wrapped in old typewriter paper that contained his present: a thin silver necklace with three star pendants, because he loved reading about the galaxy. It wasn't the best gift in the world, but I had a feeling he would like it, so I got it for him.

Veronica gave me a ride so I wouldn't have to walk. I knocked and waited for someone to open the door. Shiro did, while eating a muffin and smiling at me.
"Come in, Lance"
It wasn't the first time I was inside the house, so I walked to the dining room and saw the big table was full of delicious-looking snacks. A sweet smell came from the kitchen.
Keith was sitting on the couch, next to James. He was wearing a blue button up and his hair was loosely braided. He was opening a box which I guessed was James' present. It was a couple of CDs.
As soon as he saw me, Keith stood up to welcome me.
"Thanks for coming. I like your shirt" he said, with the biggest smile.
"I told you I'd be here" I replied "Here, this is for you"
"You didn't have to get me anything" he said, but his eyes were shining.
He opened the present carefully so as not to tear the wrapping and, when he saw the necklace, I knew I had made the right decision.
"Oh my god, Lance! It's beautiful! I love it"
He put his arms around my neck and hugged me so tightly I actually thought I'd run out of oxygen. James was staring at us from the couch. Soon after, Keith sat next to him again, but I was still thinking that James' gift had barely earned a mumbled thank you.
Five uncomfortable minutes after, his mother, Krolia, came out of the kitchen to tell us dinner was ready. Her husband, Mr. Kogane, followed her carrying a huge plate. I sat next to Shiro, facing Keith.

"The stew was delicious, Krolia" I sad, when we finished our food.
"Yes Mrs. Kogane, you are a wonderful cook" James agreed.
Krolia smiled. I rolled my eyes at James.
We had cake for dessert and, afterwards, Keith's parents cleaned up. Shiro lay down on the couch and turned on the TV, and us three went out for fresh air.

I tried to make conversation with James just to be polite, but he wasn't making much of an effort. He had his arm around Keith's waist, and he fidgeted with his braid.
Then, his phone started ringing loudly. He let go of Keith, excused himself and went over to the front of the house to speak privately. Keith and I were left alone.
"So...." I started "Did your parents get you anything?"
"Books" he smiled "as always. I'm not complaining, but your present was my favorite"
"Shouldn't you be at least pretending it's your boyfriend's?" I laughed.
"Are you kidding me? I don't even listen to that band anymore"
We stood in silence for a little bit.
"We should ditch him and go somewhere" I blurted suddenly. I had no idea why I said that, but I wished I had stayed silent.
Lucky me, James came back right then, and Keith didn't have a chance to respond.
"Babe" he called Keith "I have to go, do you mind?"
"No, it's okay. See you tomorrow?"
But James wasn't gonna take that as a goodbye, he had to kiss Keith. Right in front of me. It didn't last long, at least, because Shiro was apparently at the window and started screaming at him.
"How dare you kiss my brother like that in front of me?! Man, have some respect!"
I turned, trying hard not to let out a laugh.
"Don't even think of hurting him" Shiro continued "because if you do, trust me I won't hesitate to use your face as a punching bag"
I'm in.
I knew Shiro didn't mean to come off so aggressive, but James didn't know him like I do and ran off a bit scared.

"You haven't been together for that long and I'm already feeling like a third wheel" I told Keith after a while.
He sighed. "Lance..."
"We have dated before, James and I" he said "Before I met you. I never told my parents. I broke up with him because of... issues"
"Okay. Just be careful. Shiro and I just want you to be okay" I didn't say anything else about that.

We were about to come into the house again when I almost stepped on something. A phone.
"James must have dropped it" I said.
I turned it on and the call history appeared on the screen. I saw the name on top of the list: Allura.
