Three months after

I ran downstairs just like every morning, but it's been three months that I'm happy to do so.
My dad was caught in a fight, drunk, and he was arrested. After that, he lost custody of us to my bigger sister Veronica, who came back to take care of us. I didn't have to take Rachel to school, or pick her up, or buy the groceries, but I kept my job at the bookstore because Keith comes by every day to keep me company while I work.
"Need a ride, honey?" Veronica asked when she saw me in a rush.
"No sis, but thanks anyway. Keith is picking me up anytime now."
I went outside. In those three months Keith and I had spent a lot of time together, we had become best friends. My friends have learnt to accept Keith as a friend, although they kept asking if were we gonna make out already. I wanted to punch them every time they asked.
I walked around the block and waited for him in our meeting up bench, and he arrived after five minutes. As always, I got up to hug him and he stood on his tiptoes to kiss my cheek. I loved when he did that, none of our friends liked too much physical contact, but I'm a hugger.
"Morning!" I said, smiling.
"Morning, Lance. Slept well?" Keith, always so nice.
"I barely slept, actually. Physics test today" I answered, shrugging. He rolled his eyes at me "I'm fine, really."
"You know I don't approve of you not sleeping" he concluded.

After making sure I got to my class in time for the test, Keith headed to the gym for a pep talk his class had to attend to.
"Everybody to their desks. No cheating. No talking. No making noises. Don't bother me or I'll kick you out" the teacher said, very seriously "I won't hesitate, I'll rip your tests in half and you'll fail."
Sooooo nice, I thought.
The test was really complicated, but I had studied a lot and I knew all the answers. Done. I turned in the test papers and sat behind my desk in silence.

During lunch I sat where I always did, but Keith was nowhere to be seen. I looked towards his old table and I saw him there, sitting next to a tall brunette boy that had his arm around Keith.
What?
Keith smiled and didn't seem uncomfortable.
What?

I ate alone and, when I had finished, I got up and left the cafeteria. I didn't understand the way I had reacted, but somehow I was upset that he hadn't sit with me.

At the end of the day I didn't feel like waiting for him and I left alone again, but after walking down the first street I heard someone running after me.
"Lance!" he yelled.
I halted until he arrived next to me, and we started walking together.
"Sorry" I said, with little to none emotion "I was distracted."
I know he didn't believe me, but he didn't say anything.
"Hey" he reached for my shoulder "what's wrong?"
"Nothing" I faked a smile "I waited for you at lunch, where were you?"
"So that was it, huh?" I didn't reply "I was at my old table. I thought you'd seen me."
"I didn't" I lied.
"Lance, I've got to tell you something" at least, he was going to be honest.
"I'm your best friend, am I not? You can tell me everything"
He nodded.
"That guy... I know you saw us. His name is James. He asked me out, and I said yes"
