Chapter 2

‘Mate!’

My wolf cried inside my head, but I ignored her. I know and I can feel that Xander was just near but I forced myself to not go and jump to him and declare that I am his mate.

“You ok Sam?” I almost forgot that I’m with Macky, turning my head to face him I nod my head to answer his question and we continued to walk inside our school in a comfortable silence.

“SAMANTHAAAAAA!” Arms circled my body after hearing Maxine’s high pitched voice. “Are you ok now? Why didn’t you call that you’re going to school today. We could have picked you up.” Maxine rumbled after releasing me from her tight hug, not even giving me any chance to speak. “Oh hi, Macky.” Maxine said as she noticed Macky standing beside me, he just gave her a small smile in response.

“Sorry if I didn’t call you. It slipped my mind.” I tried to reason out with a guilty smile.

“Yah yah, you’re always like that.” Maxine said while rolling her eyes on me. “Come. The others will be so happy to see you and you have to tell us what really happened to you. You’ve been gone all week. And you got sick?? Were’s don’t get sick that long.” Maxine hooked her hands on my left arm after saying all that without a pause and looked at Macky. “Are you coming?”

“I have to get something from my locker first. I’ll follow.”

“Oh okay, come on Sam.” I just waved my hand goodbye to Macky as Maxine started to drag me away. I shouldn’t have gotten to school this early and save myself from answering their questions ‘til lunch time. Checking my watch, I sighed in relief having fifteen minutes left before the school bell starts to ring.

‘Mate!’ My wolf howled inside my head in anticipation. Before we can arrive to our regular spot here in school, I know I’ll see my mate there with our friends. I’ve been dreading the encounter since last night, but this is now or never. It’s better to face my fears and live with it, than hide from him all of my life.

But as I looked up, his handsome face grazed my sight. Actually he look a little not himself, he has bags under his eyes and he has grown his beard in an unusually longer manner but still he has the most handsome face I ever get laid my eyes on. And there he was seating lazily at the ground, his back resting against a tree trunk while reading a book and earphones in his ears that I assume was connected to his I-pod.

My heart started to pound in a fast phase. I know if someone got really close to me they will hear clearly how fast and loud my heart is beating. In dread? In excitement? In happiness? I don’t know.

There’s only one thing I’m sure of, I’ll never get used to seeing his handsome face and feel normal, act normal.

And as my mate looked up and saw me, he gave me his most breath taking smile. And my world stopped revolving, my heart stopped beating, I unconsciously held my breath, I could not look away, as if nothing exists other than the two of us.

But tears started to build up in the back of my eyes, remembering those things I promised myself. This is the nearest I can get to my mate, being friends. Before I could lose my façade of relaxed state, one of my friends’ blocked my sight of Xander.

“Sam! You’re alive!” Evie, one of my close friends, said in a much exaggerated manner. And all my friends laugh before throwing me those questions I’m dreading to answer. Like, what happened? Why didn’t you contact us? And so much more in the same sense.

Looking around, Lana, Maxine, Dean, Evie, Kate, Calvin and of course Xander who was now beside my friends, were looking at me expectantly. Looking at Xander’s eyes, I saw joy and confusion? The latter I can’t understand.
