Prologue
“What do you think his wolf looks like?” I looked at Lana’s face on the rearview mirror of her car as she asked her question. We were heading at Xander’s barbeque party to celebrate his eighteenth birthday and of course, of his wolf coming out.
“Hmm… Big and hairy?” Maxine laughed at her own joke while Lana was giving her that annoyed look. “What? It’s true, right Sam?” Maxine turned her head towards me. She was sitting in front beside Lana while I was here at the back seat.
I shook my head in amusement; Maxine was always the one who makes a funny answer to a simple question. “Yah, it’s true. Just like you.” Among the three of us, Maxine’s the only one who can turn into a wolf. She turned eighteen two months ago.
“Ha ha ha ha! Nice one there, Samantha.” Lana looked at Maxine and stuck her tongue out.
“But I think Xander would have a big and strong wolf. His father was the late Alpha so what can we expect.” I voiced out my opinion.
Xander’s real parents were dead, killed in the middle of a wolf war when he was just merely a year old. He was left with the care of the new alpha, which was the younger brother of his real father, and her wife. And luckily for him he was treated like he was their own son, actually he was spoiled not just by the alpha but also of his sons and daughters giving Xander the best life he could have.
Lana shrugged and looked straight back to the road.
“Hmm… Do you think Sarah is his mate?” Maxine blurted out of nowhere.
“I do think so. That’s what he wants, right?” That sounded a little bitter coming from my mouth. Ok. Ok. I admit it. I kinda have a little crush on Xander but hopefully next week on my eighteenth birthday my mate would show himself and this petty feelings for Xander will all be gone.
“Why do you always ask that, Max? You sounded like you don’t like her to be Xander’s mate.” Lana was right. These past few days Maxine always asks Xander if what he’d do if Sarah would not turn out to be his mate. Nah, Maxine found her mate so it’s not possible that she likes Xander.
“Nothing. I just have a feeling that Sarah is not Xander’s mate, but my thoughts can be wrong.” Maxine dismissively said. “By the way, what did you get for Xander, Sam?”
“Ohh. I was just thinking that his wolf came out last night, so I got him this.” I then pulled out a white pouch, where I put my gift, from my sling bag and showed them a simple silver dog tag I got for him. It has three claw marks on the side and on the other side were the pack’s name and his name.
“Hahaha. That’s the perfect gift ever, a dog tag for a dog. Hahaha.” Maxine’s rowdy laughter filled the car.
“You can stop now Max.” Lana said with a big grin plastered on her face. “We’re here now.” I looked outside and the Alpha’s house came into view. The house was really pretty big, a three storey mansion in the middle of the woods.
“Come on.” Maxine dragged us towards the house. As we came at the front door Maxine lightly knocked on it and within seconds, Xander’s Mom opened it.
“Good afternoon Mrs. Martin.” Lana, Maxine and I simultaneously greeted Xander’s Mom.
“Hello girls. They’re all at the backyard.” Mrs. Martin said in all smiles motioning us to go straight to their backyard and we sure did. Mrs. Martin was right, all of our friends and some of their relatives are here. They’re all busy eating and cooking barbeques while loud music was playing in the background.
