Geoffrey Brinker, Clinton Hills' newest appointed mayor. A little fact I didn't know about until just now as Mayor Brinker glares in my direction.

I take in a deep, calming breath, not ready to let this man intimidate me just like his son tried to do not even an hour ago.

I feel a hand press on the small of my back and I already know it's Adam trying to soothe me. I swivel my head to glimpse up at him as he looks straight ahead at the mayor and Josh. When he side glances me, the corner of his mouth rises only enough for me to notice.

Taking my left hand, I reach it back behind me and intertwine our fingers together as I hold his hand at the small of my back. No one in front of us can see the gesture. Adam gives my hand a small squeeze as he softly caresses his thumb over the side of my hand, reassuring me even more.

"Sheriff Daniels, this is completely unacceptable," Mayor Brinker bellows as he holds his hand out, palm up towards his son.

Josh, like the cowardice excuse of a man he is, pulls on the act with a thickness as he groans in pain. He holds his hand to his stomach area as if I had hit him there as well. Nope, aim a little lower, buddy.

"Your daughter," the mayor glares over in my direction with an accusing eye. "I want her arrested for assault. Now!" he roars as he points at me.

I can't help but laugh under my breath at how his thick fingers remind me of Jimmy Dean sausages. Of course, he notices and growls frustratedly as he takes a step towards me.

"You find this funny? Of course, you would. What my son ever saw in you, I'll never understand," he shakes his head as his hands form fist at his side.

"Funny, I was thinking the same thing about my daughter for months whenever she was dating your son," Dad pipes up as he passes to stand directly in front of me. Protecting me, as usual.

"Get out of the way, Sheriff. I understand she's your daughter but the law is the law," the mayor points out as if he truly cares about justice.

Dad stands quietly in front of me and when he looks over his shoulder, he creases his brows as if he's contemplating something of importance in his head. We stare at each other for an abrupt moment before he turns back towards the mayor, standing tall and proud as he ultimately makes up his mind.

"No."

"Excuse me?" Mayor Brinker exasperates and even I'm caught off guard.

"I'm not arresting my daughter. There are two sides to every story and I'm sure Josh isn't completely innocent in all of this. I can question her and go from there. You know Mayor, protocol," Dad grins, making the mayor's mouth gape open and close.

Is my dad playing favoritism right now because I'm his daughter? Of course, he is. But Dad also knows that I wouldn't willingly hurt Josh, or anyone for that matter unless it was for a reason—such as self-defense.
