Chapter 38

I twist my neck from side to side to ease it of some of the cramps and pain I feel

I hug my knees tighter towards my chest and rest my chin on them while my butt constantly aches from being too long pressed on the floor

I'm sitting outside the room that Doctor Cole and his nurse are treating Paris. They've been at it for an hour and I've been sitting beside the door ever since

I hear his footsteps before I see him as he appears at the stairs. Jace stares at me before breathing heavily and beckoning on me to follow him

I shake my head, deciding I want to stay put

"Don't make me come carry you from that spot" he threatens and I sense that he's not joking so I get up and follow him. He has on a satisfied smile when he sees my reaction

He leads me down the stairs and into the most comfortable couch in the room. When I sit, I'm immediately covered with a very comfortable and soothing blanket

I smile and snuggle into it "Thanks Jace. I really don't know how to thank you for all this" I say as he sits beside me

"I've done nothing, Autumn. Besides why would you need to pay me back, I'm too awesome for that" he jokes and I laugh

"But really though, thank you for showing up when you did" I say "How did you even find me?" My brows scrunch and I turn to face him

"I called Muna to ask for Paris' school. Oh and she should be arriving soon. She said she'd come back home as soon she can" he explains with a warm smile

"Thank you so much. You're a real great friend" I say and he brushes it off

"Yeah, yeah. Don't go soft on me right now. Although I would like to know how you were able to drive there without killing yourself or any other unfortunate creature on the road"

I laugh "It's a mystery to me too. I didn't even think I could make it"

"Then why didn't you just wait for me to come get you?" He asks, concerned and all now

"I don't know. I didn't think of that. All that was in my head was getting to her as soon as possible" I shrug

He's watching me silently, regarding my face "What?" I ask

"You love her don't you?" He asks and I nod

"I do"

Just then I hear Doc's footsteps and I jump off the couch, leaving the blanket and Jace behind

Doctor Cole laughs when he sees me "She'll be fine. We've administered treatment and there's luckily no internal damage" he puts a hand on my shoulder "Let her sleep the day off, okay?"

I nod quietly and step out of the way for him and his nurse to pass

Jace shakes his hand "Thanks so much for coming"

"No problem" Doc replies and with another smile, he and his nurse leave

Jace turns back to me and I slump back down in the couch "Would you like to eat anything?"

"Oh yes, sure" I reply

"I've got frozen pizza"

"What topping?" I follow him into the kitchen area and sit on a stool while he reaches into the refrigerator

"Pepperoni?" He asks and a grin immediately breaks out on my face

"God yes" I groan as my hunger begins to melt my insides "I feel so tired and want to sleep until tomorrow"
