Y/N POV

》》》status: edited, 03-22-21《《《

I woke up the next morning, eyes groggy. I kept tossing and turning throughout the night; the events of the previous day left me anxious and confused, translating into a terrible night's rest.

I yawned, hoisting my body upright. I stretched casually, and as I turned to the side I noticed Newt fast asleep, sitting in a chair right by my hammock. I blinked rapidly, questioning why he was there. Shrugging, I took this chance to absorb his features. His fluffy blonde hair whisked in random directions as he sat there cross-armed, body uncomfortably hunched to the side. His face was shaped in the most proper way, a soft oval-heart mixture. His long eyelashes elegantly touched his cheeks, his chest heaving gently as he breathed in peace.

My eyes started to shift towards his body, to which I squeezed my eyes with inner embarrassment, shut up Y.N, shut up. I shook my head and crawled out of the hammock, placing my feet softly on the ground. I contemplated whether I should let him sleep, or wake him up. I chose to wake him up, since I had no clue what to do and honestly felt lost without his guidance.

I stuck my hand out, hesitating for a moment before poking the side of his face, "Newt... Hey, Newt." He groaned slightly, his body shifting away.

"Newttttt." I poked him again, this time he shot up eyes wide.

"Danger! Danger!" Newt blurted out in a panic, but his eyes softened when he saw me, a pink tint made its way among his cheeks.

"Uhh, sorry." He looked down embarrassed, scratching the back of his neck. I couldn't help but laughed at him as I put on my boots.

"Well, if I'd have known you'd react in that way I would've gotten the others to come to watch." I teased, looking up at him as I finished noting my laces.

"Would you now?" Newt now laughed himself, standing up with a stretch, "Let's go grab a bite to eat, then I'll show you the different jobs 'round here so you can start work today." He smiled gently before motioning me to go forward, and as I did so he placed a hand gently on the small of my back, guiding me forwards through the homestead. Despite barely knowing this guy, I didn't mind his soft fingers delicately pushing me softly; if anything the sensation caused a shiver to dance through my nerves.

Newt led me towards another hut that had multiple tables, along with a decent-sized kitchen in the back. He stopped in front of one of the tables, motioning for me to take a seat on the wooden bench.

"I'll be right back with some breakfast, Frypan makes the best grub" Newt smiled, heading towards the back. I returned a smile, nodding eagerly as my stomach grumbled. When he walked away I turned and noticed Gally, walking up towards me from the field.

"Mornin' cutie.," He said, slithering into the seat next to me.

I furrowed my eyebrows, "Do you usually call everyone cutie? Or am I just one of the lucky ones?" I asked annoyed.

The freckled boy slowly placed his hand on my thigh, excitement gleaming through his expression. I cringed, shoving his hand off of me in revolt, scooting away to the edge of the bench; Gally only followed.

"Uh. Hey. Wanna not." I snarled.

"So, wanna join the building job with me? You could watch me work, and I'm sure you'd enjoy the sight." He said cockily, taking another hold on my thigh, rubbing his thumb across the skin.

I mentally gaged at him, "Seriously, stop touching me," I swatted at his hand.
"And in regards to your offer-No. But thanks." I said sarcastically, rolling my eyes. As if timing could not have been more perfect, Newt was walking back towards us. Thank god.

"Here Y/N I got yo-" Newt stopped mid-sentence and squinted at Gally's hand on my leg.

I groaned, swatting it away, for the third time.

"-your breakfast.." He finished and sat down next to me, eying the two of us.

Gally then leaned over, whispering into my ear, "See you at the building job."

He then stood up, walking away towards his friends who all started hollering and hooting, slapping him in the back. Once again, I rolled my eyes, furrowing my brows in distaste.

"Suddenly I'm not hungry," I groaned, resting my cheek on my palm.

"Out of curiosity, why was his hand there?" Newt nodded towards my leg, eyeing me. I wanted to smash my head against the table.

"He was being gross and flirty, deciding he owns the universe, apparently granting him the allowance to put his hands wherever he wants," I exclaimed, beet red.

"Hmm I see...I'll talk to him about it. I'll make sure it doesn't happen again," Newt said while shoving my plate towards me.

"Thank you," I sighed but smiled at him warmly. In frustration, I stabbed a sausage that lay defenselessly on my plate, eyeing it for a moment as if contemplating whether I should ingest it or not. My hunger took over, and I munched on it greedily.

"So my job is a track-hoe. I take care of the crops, and make sure everything is in order regarding vegetation and whatnot." Newt explained while he walked me around the glade. The sun was bright and captivating, causing the grass to flourish and the trees to dance happily amongst the slight breeze.

"The med-jacks take care of injuries, the slicers kill the animals for food, the sloppers do house tasks, the builders build everything you see, and the bricknicks are the same, but mostly stick to house-ish buildings-" Newt continued, using his hands to explain everything he was saying. I nodded following along.

"-The baggers deal with the dead bodies, not that there are many often but it's possible. The cook prepares meals, and last but not least the runners. They run throughout the maze and try and find a way out of this hell hole." He said, "Good that?"

I squished my face together at his funny use of words, but nodded again, "Good that?" I laughed.

Newt smiled, placing a hand on my shoulder, "So, what's your pick?"

"Runner," I said immediately. (Yea, typical tmr ff, but it's fine)

"No no no NONONO." He said and shook his head, "I already explained why you can't. Work as a track-hoe with me instead, I promise it's a lot safer."

"But-" I got interrupted by Newt.

"No buts. Track-hoe it is! I don't want you getting hurt as a runner, and that's that. Plus I gotta protect you greenie, you're new here." He said, placing his hand on my back again, leading me deeper into the glade.

I wanted to protest, but I silenced myself once the shiver from his touch ran through my body once again.
