Y/N POV

The heat radiated from the sky like a pulsing magnet, and I wiped my sweat-stained brow. Boy, being a track-hoe is harder than I thought. Not sure what I was doing in my past life, but it clearly wasn't anything regarding physical activity- I was exhausted. I slightly detested Newt for deeming me incapable of being a runner, however, I tried to understand that he was just trying to look out for the newbie. Despite being lost and confused about how and why I was here, I just obliged, conforming to the new group that surrounded me.

However, for some strange reason, I felt the desire to impress Newt; so I started hitting the tree stump once again with my machete in long, aggressive strokes.

"Heyy there ya go greenie," Newt nodded in admiration, joining me in the task of removing the stubborn stump.

"This- is so- exhausting-" I exhaled, trying to continue my assertive motions, attempting to teach the tree who's boss.

Newt scoffed, but a smile played its way onto his lips, the corners curling upwards, "Don't be such a baby you shank."

As soon as he made that comment I stopped what I was doing, standing up tall and staring at the blonde with a deadpan expression on my face "Excuse me?"

His bottom lip found its way between his teeth, holding back a childish grin, "You heard me."

"Oh, yeah? Why don't you say it again, to my face?" I squinted at the male in front of me, crossing my arms. Newt stared back confidently, parting his lips slightly before repeating the insulting phrase.

"Baby."

"Oh, that's it," I felt a sly smile work onto my face, and I grabbed a water bucket that was near a log, "You asked for it you blonde headed twig-"

"Don't you even think about it greenie-" Newt put his arms up in defense but the water was already soaking into his dirty clothes.

Newt's hair lied flat against his face, the water droplets trickling down his nose and chin as an unimpressed expression lingered.

I started laughing, tossing the water bucket to the ground. Newt raised a suggestive eyebrow while wiping his hair out of his eyes, slicking the champagne locks back.

"I think you want a hug now.," He said before making a beeline towards me.

I squealed in disagreement while running backward, tripping over the metal buckets' convenient placement. Luckily I caught my footing while staggering slightly, but within seconds I stumbled over a strategically placed root, and the next thing I knew, fell into a pair of handy bushes. Newt came tumbling after me, pouncing on top of the bush, embracing me as he soaked me. I screamed while he laughed, but I too joined in on the musical echo's out voices created, but I suddenly felt shy about our sudden closeness.

"Ew. Now I'm really wet." I whined, trying to dodge the fact that he was on top of me.

"To be fair you deserve it." He pushed himself up, arms holding himself above me. "You're welcome."

"I don't think I said thank you."

About half an hour later after our shenanigans, we finished chopping the tree stump. Newt and I shared playful glances the entire time, and I felt very comfortable around his presence; he was soft-spoken while being in command, but he was also a very kind soul, someone who was caring and comforting.
