Y/N POV

"BBBBAAAACCCOOONNN!" I screamed excitedly as I sat down at the table. The aroma made my mouth water, and Frypan gave me a wide smile, flipping the strips within the pan.

"You seem cheery," he said, his eyes gazing into mine with a hint of knowing. Thomas and Chris watched from the other side of the table, raising a brow.

I shrugged as I smiled back, "today's a good day, y'know?"

Frypan laughed as he took the strips off of the fire, placing them onto a plate and pushing it towards me.

"Thanks chef," I said as I grabbed one, the salty-savoury tang melting on my tongue. The day felt extra beautiful, and I was filled with elation. Definitely because of Newt.

My cheeks warmed as I recalled what happened last night. My heart pounded through the memory, and excitement bubbled around my stomach while my mind replayed the way Newt's lips felt on my own. I smiled while I ate, wandering to a place of complete happiness.

Despite being stuck between four stone walls with demonic creatures on the other side; I felt hopeful. Something that felt wrong to feel... but I didn't care.

"Good morning love."

I turned my head when I heard Newt behind me, his eyes smiling at me as he reached out with his hand, placing it on my back. He slid into the bench next to me and my skin tingled as the tips of his fingers tracing circles against the fabric of my shirt. He leaned in slowly, kissing my cheek gently; which left the boys on the other side gasp.

"Hey," I whispered, "Good morning to you too."

I looked across the table to meet the eyes of Thomas and Chris, who were smirking up a storm.

"What?" Newt and I asked in unison

"I caught you kissing." Chris said, holding a hand over his mouth to prevent himself from laughing.

"T-that wasn't...kissing." I blushed as I rolled my eyes, before looked down at my lap in embarrassment.

"Pft sure." Thomas said, his gaze darting between the two of us.

"I mean that peck? No. I mean't last night," Chris folded his arms, a smug smile playing on his lips.

I felt my body heat up as I covered my face with my hands. God, my brother caught us.

I looked at Newt and he looked about as tomato red as I was, but he cleared his throat, leaning over the table.

"Kissing?" He raised a brow, his accent playful, "I mean, it was borderline making out."

My eyes snapped to his and I gasped lightly, "Newt!" I tried to not laugh as he pushed me with his shoulder, adding fuel to the fire.

"Oh my god," Thomas mumbled, grabbing a piece of bacon to distract himself.

Under the table Newt grabbed my hand, squeezing it in admiration as he looked down at me. I glared at him dramatically, but smiled and squeezed him back.

"Are you sure you don't want to do any other job?" Alby sighed, crossing his arms.

I shook my head, "No, I don't. Please just let me try being a runner?" I begged, holding my arms out in exclamation.

I knew last time being in the maze didn't end well... but that time was different. I wasn't going in to explore, I went in to try and help Thomas... even if it really fucked things over more in the end.

I'm not entirely sure what it was about the maze, but the entrance was extremely compelling. I felt the intense urge to explore and see what it was really like inside- despite all the backlash the boys have given me ever since I fell.

"I really don't think that's a good idea. Look how last time went." Alby said, watching me carefully. I knew he was looking out for me; but I wanted to give it a shot.

"I know, it was awful; but please just one try. One try to be an actual runner." I pleaded once more.

Alby and I stared at each other for a moment before he sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose with his fingers in contemplation.

"FINE," he spoke through gritted teeth, "One run."

I smiled excitedly, wrapping my arms around him, "thanks Alby."

His body loosened with the hug as he patted my back, "You're lucky you asked early in the morning. Minho and Thomas leave in five so get packed and meet at the maze doors."

"Aye aye captain," I saluted as I turned, running out of the treehouse towards the hammocks.

Newt was still lying in his hammock as I passed him, and my breath hitched in my throat nervously once I realized he probably wouldn't be too happy about it.

"Why do you look so happy?" Newt laughed at me cutely, a singular eye opening to watch me dig through my bag.

"Uh," my smile faded nervously, "I'm going to run with Minho and Thomas for the day."

Newt sat up, his face happy to pale to looking within a millisecond. He shook his head before words even came out of his lips.

"What?" He stood up, folding his arms, "No. Who said?"

"Alby." I mumbled, throwing my backpack over my shoulder.

The blondes brow creased together as he watched my every move.

"I- I don't think that's a good idea," Newt began, reaching out for me; but I was already beginning to walk away, worried he'd try to convince me otherwise.

I gave him a small smile, "I gotta go Newt, I'll see you later," I waved as I turned and started running towards the door, eying Thomas and Minho who stood patiently waiting.

The grass felt tough against my feet as I hurried through it, the sun shining in anticipation. I was ready.

"Heyyy well isn't it the greenie who was dumb enough to run into the maze for the night?" Minho said and chuckled as I approached him near the doors.

"Yea yea- you were so crazy I had to save your ass." I laughing.

"Oh shove it up your-" Minho started but I felt someone grab my shoulder.

"Y/N..do-ont go!" Newt panted, attempting to catch his breath. He had followed behind me.

"Newt," I turned, placing my hands behind his neck, holding him to look at me.

He watched me, lips parted as quick exhales escaped him.

"I'll be ok." I smiled reassuringly.

"But last time-" He whispered, unable to finish his sentence before pulling me into a hug. He held me close, squeezing lightly as he did so, resting his chin on top of my head. I held him back,y face against his chest for a moment before I pulled away. I looked up at him, concern written all over his expression.

"I promise, I'll be fine." I whispered. Newt shook his head as another person came up from behind him.

"Come on love birds. She's going, she will be alright Newt." Alby said, holding Newt's and pulling him away gently.

"Please, be safe.." He sighed, and before Alby could drag him any further he grabbed my hand, planting his a kiss on top.

"I promise!" I smiled a small smile. Thomas and Minho rolled their eyes.

"Lets go already!" Thomas said, starting his descent into the maze walls. Minho and I followed behind, and before I turned the corner I looked back towards Newt as he stood there, looking inside the stone at me: hopeless.

My stomach churned, the beauty of the morning beginning to wash away as anxiety kicked in. But before I turned the corner, I blew him a kiss, and then lost sight of the boy.
