James's POV
"Wings. Above all things, it had to be wings. Why wings?" She asked pulling away from my embrace.
"Well, at least you don't have horns or a tail." I said joking, she looked at me and chuckled while she punched me softly on my left arm.
"I'm serious. Every time I think that everything's okay, something bad happens. I'm a freak and now I'm uglier than before. I don't think I can go to school anymore. Goodbye to my volleyball career, goodbye college, goodbye graduation and goodbye everything. You should probably go. I don't think that you're safe with me. You don't have to stay with me, I don't want pity." She said looking at her lap with sadness clear in her voice. I cupped her face with my hands lifting her face so she was looking into my eyes. I saw that she was holding back tears.
"Sofia Jackson Fernandez, you're not ugly, not even a bit. You're funny, kind, smart, brave and you put the needs of others before yours, even if you get hurt in the process. You. Are. Beautiful. I'm not with you because I pity you, I'm with you because I like you and I don't want to stay away from you, not even a bit. Plus, we can be freaks together." I finished and she laughed, making me laugh with her.
Ask her now! This is the perfect chance to ask her to be your girlfriend! My subconscious shouted at me. I was about to talk again when she started speaking.
"Aww. Thank you! You're the best friend ever. I like you too!" She said and kissed my cheek. Wait! Best friend ever? What the fuck?! Something's wrong.
"Sofia, do you remember when we first kissed?" I asked waiting for her to analyze what she just said about me just being the best friend.
"Kissed? We kissed?" She asked intrigued.
"Yeah. Remember? When we went to to movies and I drove you home? I think it was a Saturday."
"Uhh, I remember watching the movie with you, meeting Nicholas and the drive home, but I... don't remember a kiss." She says frowning deep in thought.
"Do you remember any of our kisses?" I asked in desperation and she shakes her head slowly indicating that she doesn't remember any of those moments
"Sorry." She whispered. I grabbed her hand and dragged her to the hospital were we left everybody waiting for us. They were talking about something and they all went silent when we entered.
"What's wrong?" Dereck asked standing up from the bed.
"Sofia can't remember when we kissed. I think that some of her memories were erased. It's the only explanation." I said in one breath which made me a little dizzy because I didn't drank the blood bag Tom offered me. I was too worried about Sofia that I couldn't do anything but think about her and that all of this was my fault, so I gave my blood bag to Mathew.
"YOU KISSED?!" Tom shouted charging towards us and pulling Sofia away from me who stayed silent and looked confused the whole time. Dereck stood in front of her in a protective way just like Tom. Now I can barely see her. Dereck's wings are making it had to see her.
"Tom, calm down. That's not what you should be worried about now. You should be concerned that our daughter had some sort of memory loss. James, what else she doesn't remember?" Maria asked standing up and rubbing Tom's right arm trying to calm him down.
"I'm tired! I'm going to sleep. I'll be in the room next door if you need anything." Sofia said rubbing her eyes and walked out of the room with Dereck following behind. I turned my attention back to Maria and sighed.
"Well, she only remembers the moments of us being just like regular friends."
"What do you mean?" She asked taking a step towards me and Tom leans against the wall in the back with his hands in his pockets and a very serious face mixed with anger. My family stood on the other side of the room, but were still part of the conversation from afar.
