Chapter 20

Sofia's POV

"Missed me?" 

--Flashback--

(Around seven months ago)

My volleyball practice just ended, so I started walking home because Dereck's car broke down this morning at home. Dereck headed home right after his soccer practice was cancelled because of the rain. He offered to wait for me, but I insisted on him going home, because that day he was assigned a very complicated math project that was due the next day and I knew that instead of doing his homework while I practiced, he would be staring at the girls and waste time. After a while of convincing, he finally agreed and went home with the condition that I would call him right after the practice ended. It was around 5:30pm and I was thirsty and hungry, so I went to the Seven Eleven that's really close to the school. I took a water bottle from the fridge and grabbed a big chocolate chips muffin. When I made my way to the cash register to pay for the food, I noticed that the guy behind the counter was sad. He looked in his early twenties. Taller than me, skinny, pale and very shy.

"Hi!" I greeted while he was passing the items through the register.

"Hi!" He smiled shyly. Then I paid and he gave me the bag and my change.

"Thank You! Hey, you should smile more often, it suits you."

"Really?" He asked.

"Yeah! Totally. And whatever happened to you, don't worry about it, it'll be okay.  Anyway, thank you and have a nice day and remember...smile" I waved goodbye and went home.

Who would've thought that one simple gesture of kindness would unleash such a nightmare?
Every day since I left the Seven Eleven, I would bump into him almost everywhere. At first I thought that it was pure coincidence and we would talk a little, but after a while, I started feeling uncomfortable.

One day, he showed up to my school with flowers and a ring. The security guy didn't let him pass. I was in the cafeteria having lunch. When he got there, I was eating and talking with some friends (guys included) and he shot Evan on his left shoulder. Everybody freaked out. He got closer to me, got on his knees and asked me to marry him. I didn't said anything. I was in shock. He stood up and was about to shot Dereck, who was standing in front of me protecting me, when I pulled him away and accepted to get married with him. He smiled, kissed my forehead and dragged me out into the hallway. In the meantime, a random student had called the police and they were on their way including my parents, the FBI and a SWAT team. As a security protocol, all the doors were locked automatically because they were electric. So we were all trapped.

"Fuck! Baby, I think we're trapped. Let's try the principal's office." Carl said and grabbed my hand. We went to the principal's office and Carl shot him on the head. I screamed in horror. At this point, I was really freaking out and without thinking twice I ran away when he was trying to open the window. She his in the girls bathroom. She stepped on the sink to get inside the air bent that was on the wall and called her mom. Right after the phone started ringing she answered.

"Sofia!"

"Mom! Mom! I'm scared! Sam...and the principal...he shot them, now the principal's dead and Sam's hurt...and I...and I don't know what to do..."

"Ok, Sofia calm down and take a deep breath. Now tell me where are you right now." She said with a panicking tone.

"I...I'm inside the air bent on the girls bathroom. I...I managed to get away from him. He's ..he's trying to get out through the window of the principal's office."  I felt something running down my cheeks and realized that I was crying and shaking nonstop. I wiped away some of the tears and tried to control my breathing. Then, dad started speaking through the phone.

"Hey baby girl! Now listen to me very carefully okay? I want you to stay inside that air dent no matter what you hear or see Ok? Stay quiet and calm down, we're already here. We're just giving instructions to proceed to rescue you. Everyone else is out. They managed to escape through the cafeteria windows, there's only you and him in there."

"Ok, but dad, be careful. I think he took something, like an adrenaline pill or something like that. He's out of control!"

"Don't worry about it, we'll handle it. Just stay there and remember, no matter what, you'll stay there quiet and as calm as you can. We're going in now, I have to go. We love you Sophie. Everything will be over soon." Then I waited there for like five minutes until I saw a spider on her right shoulder. I screamed and stormed out of the bathroom into the hallway without taking precautions. I turned around and my eyes widened when I saw Carl standing a few feet away from me glaring at me. I was about to run when he tackled me and pushed me against the lockers pinning me with his body and griping my hands over my head.

"WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?!!!." He yelled in my face.

"LET ME GO!" I yelled back. 

"Can't you see that I'm doing this for us? So that we can be together?" He said while kissing my neck. I couldn't hold the tears back anymore and started crying nonstop while praying for a miracle.

I whimpered and looked away. Then he disconnected his lips from my neck and stared into my eyes. He started leaning closer and I closed my eyes shut. I heard a gun shot and the next thing I knew, he fell on the floor taking me with him. I opened my eyes and saw dad running towards me with a gun in his hands and a bunch of agents and police officers following behind. Dad picked me up and took me out of the building and into the car. Carl went to jail and she never heard if him until now.
