Chapter VIII

“I have an announcement for all applicants,” Yui looked up at the sound of Bean’s voice over the speaker, “the chairman wishes to interview the remaining candidates. When your number is called, please come to the first reception room on the second floor. We will start with #44 Hisoka-sama,” Yui sighed and lay her head on her pillow.

Soon after the voice returned, “will #73 Yui-sama please come to the reception room?”

‘Huh? It’s my turn already,’ she thought with a smile and began to make her way to the reception room.

“Please have a seat,” the chairman was sitting casually on a pillow with a notepad in his hands.

Yui smiled and did as he asked, “thanks”

He smiled widely with a twinkle in his eyes, “so, I’d like to ask you a few questions if that’s okay? Just to satisfy my curiosity a bit”

“Sure”

“First, why would you like to become a hunter?”

Yui furrowed her brows, she hadn’t really given any thought to what she would do if she got her license, “I’m not sure. I guess I decided to enter because my teacher thought it would be fun besides a hunter’s license can always come in handy,” she smiled genuinely.

“I see, I see,” he looked down at his pad shortly before continuing, “moving on, which of the other nine applicants are you keeping an eye on?”

Yui giggled slightly, “I don’t have any eyes so I wouldn’t know,”

The chairman smiled, “of course. Last question. Out of all the applicants, who would you least like to fight?”

“In truth I’ll fight anyone given ample reason,”

“Ah, I understand. Thank you for answering, you’re excused”

Yui got up and with a quick bow, she left the room, ‘I wonder if this has any effects on the last phase...’

Later that day, Yui decided to go look for the kitchen. Her belly was rumbling softly when she heard two familiar voices. It was Gon and Kurapika. Yui heard the smaller boy sniff. Had he been crying? Nevertheless, he suddenly broke out laughing, “After that, I was pretty miserable and lonely. I felt so helpless, I wanted company… I wanted to help someone, I guess. That’s why I was looking for you two,” he sounded a little cheerier now and Yui smiled.

“Gon.” the sound of Kurapika’s voice made Yui’s heart skip a beat, “Leorio and I have only been able to make it this far because of you. We’re truly grateful”

“I’d also like to thank you,” Gon smiled and his smile only grew when he noticed Yui standing by the corner, “Yui!” he laughed and ran over to her.

Kurapika on the other hand immediately became flustered and looked to the ground, “Gon, Yui. I’ll see you later,” he hurried.

“But-…” Yui began but he was already gone, she sighed inwardly.

~ time skip ~

“Well, everyone. I hope you got plenty of rest because the fifth and final phase of the hunter exam starts now,” Netero stood in front of the applicants and seemed to be in an especially happy mood.

“For the final phase we will be holding one on one tournaments,” he continued and in one movement, he revealed a board of the planned battles, “the one to stand alone on the top is the loser”

‘Interesting,’ Yui smiled.

“The battle rules are quite simple. Weapons are allowed. No cheating. If your opponent admits defeat, you win. However!” Netero looked at the applicants with a serious expression which was ruined by his crazy eyes, “if you kill your opponent, you will be immediately disqualified.”

‘That should be easy enough,’ Yui thought

“Our first fight is #73 Yui against #44 Hisoka”

Yui felt her friends gasp. There wasn’t a person in the room who didn’t feel the danger radiating from Hisoka. Yui gave them a reassuring smile, ‘don’t worry. I’ll need to use all of my Nen to win this one,’ she thought excited.

As the fight began, it was clear to Yui that Hisoka was out of her league but not so far out that she didn’t stand a chance. They both activated their Nen as soon as the fight started.

Yui smiled wickedly before making the first attack. She conjure her favourite knife. It is a replica of a Ben’s knife she once saw at a market and it’s spiced with a paralysing poison.

 She goes directly after his neck and hits Hisoka with a flurry of attacks. He dodges them all but the last one, it cuts his lower bicep drawing bl0od. He smiles and his aura grows. Yui takes a few step back avoiding his gummy aura.

‘I guess poison doesn’t affect you,’ she concludes annoyed.

The fight continues in a fast pace but none of them show their full potential and only use Nen to reinforce their physique. Suddenly Hisoka manages to get a hit in and sends his small opponent flying. She crashes into a pillar crushing the stone.

A frightened yell is heard from the audience. It’s Kurapika and his eyes have turned scarlet. He looks like he is about to jump at Hisoka in a fit of rage. Leorio grabs him by his arm.

“No one may interfere in a one-on-one match,” the judges exclaim, “if you step in, Yui will be disqualified”

Hisoka giggles wickedly at Kurapika’s anger before turning his attention back to Yui.

“Don’t worry, Kurapika. I’m fine,” she smiles at the blonde but blood is dripping from a gash in her jaw. Looking back at Hisoka, she sends a storm a conjured darts at him. He dodge and they instead pierce the stonewall behind him. Some of the applicants gasp at the power.

The fight goes on steadily. Hisoka of course has the upper hand but Yui seems right behind him. The audience watch their every move with wide eyes and several times Leorio and Gon must use all of their power to hold back Kurapika. The Kurta’s eyes have taken a dark shade of scarlet and he is practically shaking with worry and anger.

As the attack exchange continues, Yui look scruffier and scruffier. She is bleeding from several places and has a huge gash on her thigh. At the end, Hisoka has his big hands wrapped around her neck as he hold her up into the air. His eyes are tinted with red and he stares at his target with an insane expression.

“Yui!” Kurapika screams making Hisoka regain his senses.

The magician lets go of the now unconscious girl and laughs, “Seems like I got ahead of myself”

Kurapika finally manages to get out of the grasp of the judges looking like a mad man, “if you interfere she will be disqualified,” the head judge yells but Kurapika clearly doesn’t care.

“Don’t worry,” Hisoka smiles. The bulge in his pants has grown huge, “I lose,” he states leaving the battlefield.

In a flash, Kurapika is by Yui’s side. She is unconscious but breathing. Leorio and Gon quickly join him with Leorio’s suitcase open. Kurapika can feel his heartbeat slowly slowing down and his breath return, she is okay. She is going to be okay. When the men come to take to another room he gets up.

“I’ll go with her,” he says, his eyes never leaving her face.

“But what about your license,” Leorio asks. Of course, he is worried about Yui as well, but they both need their license and she is going to be all right.

“I don’t care”

Hisoka laughs amused at the exchange, “but how about our fight?”

Kurapika look to the board and his eyes turn scarlet with an unseen rage flashing through them, “I’ll kill you,” he states calmly
