Charlie's povThe gemin coven's peace treaty between witches and werewolves was crucial, and our departure was imminent. Just as I returned to the house, prepared to leave again in a few days, I learned of the chaos at Alex's place. His absence from the negotiation was already considered rude, but now there was more to worry about.
As soon as I heard the commotion, I ran towards Alex's home, dreading what I might find. The cacophony of shattering glass and splintering wood reached me before I even stepped inside. It was clear that something catastrophic had occurred. The guards stationed outside, who usually maintained a composed presence, now looked tense and uncertain.
Entering the house, the devastation was overwhelming. Furniture was upended, glass was scattered everywhere, and remnants of what had once been a meticulously arranged space were now in disarray. At the center of the wreckage stood Alex, a figure of anguish and fury. My heart sank at the sight. Thankfully, Ethan was still at school, spared from witnessing this scene.
"Leave me alone!" Alex shouted as soon as he saw me, his voice cracking with raw pain.
"What the hell have you done?" I asked, struggling to keep my tone calm. Inside, I was a storm of emotions—fear, frustration, and a deep-seated worry that threatened to overwhelm me. Every part of me screamed to leave him alone, to avoid provoking him further.
"He dared to enter my territory... he escaped once again. I couldn't stop him. I failed her again," Alex's voice faltered as he mentioned Davina. Tears streamed down his face, and the sight was gut-wrenching. It was a stark display of his torment, a vivid portrait of a man grappling with immense guilt and sorrow.
For the past three months, Alex had been consumed by grief. Each day was marked by his tears, his self-blame for failing to save Davina. I remembered finding him unconscious in the woods. He hadn't awakened for days, and when he finally did, his first words were a painful admission that his mate bond was gone—an indication that Davina was dead. The weight of that loss had kept him locked away in his room for what felt like an eternity. His refusal to eat and his isolation nearly led us to fear he might take his own life.
Time had passed, and we hoped he was healing, but now it seemed we had misjudged. His pain was visible, and the weight of his guilt was crushing. The outside world saw only the destruction he wrought, not the suffering that drove him. No one noticed how deeply he hated himself, how his self-loathing eclipsed any anger others directed at him.
Ethan, too, was a shadow of his former self. Silent and withdrawn, he mirrored Alex's agony, having not shed a single tear for Davina. The boy was becoming a reflection of his grief, a painful echo of Alex's own brokenness .
I wanted to reassure Alex, to find a way to salvage what was left of his resolve. "You saved your pack members' lives. That's the greatest decision you made. As for night, why don't we send our tracker after him?" I suggested, moving closer to him.
"How can you track a person whose face we don't know? I don't even know what he is—just that he's more than a werewolf. I need every bit of information on that vampire he was with and on him. I don't care if you have to gather CCTV footage or interrogate every wolf breathing. I'm giving you three days," Alex said, his voice heavy with authority. With that, he walked away towards his office, his movements abrupt and filled with unresolved anger.
As I turned to see Ethan entering the house, I saw him taking in the scene of destruction with a look of ignorance .
"It's nothing. These pieces of furniture were getting old anyway," I said, trying to offer a semblance of normalcy as I approached Ethan. He glanced at me with a distant expression before heading upstairs in silence.
