DAVINA'S POV

"Ours. It's ours," Alex's voice was low and threatening, a dark promise lingering in the air.

"Look, Alpha—I mean Alex, I shot back, my voice sharp and unyielding. I don't know what you have in mind, but sleeping with a stranger who's supposedly my mate isn't on my to-do list." My frustration was evident, and I could feel the weight of his gaze on me, his eyes unwavering and intense.

Alex chuckled, his eyes drifting to Ethan, who stood there, visibly stunned by the turn of events. Ethan's expression was a mix of confusion and indignation, adding to the tension in the room.

"Little wolf," Alex said, addressing me with a tone that was both patronizing and oddly affectionate.

"I never said you'd be sleeping with me. You can take the room. I'll take the guest room just next door. You need your space, and you've got it. As for this little boy," he continued, motioning toward Ethan, "he can have the room on the other side of this one."

With a gentle flick, he tucked a strand of my hair behind my ear, his touch both intimate and unsettling.

"I will sleep with her," Ethan declared, stepping forward with an air of defiance and anger that made me flinch. His protectiveness was palpable, and it made me smile despite the situation.

"Aren't you a bit bold to challenge me?" Alex tilted his head, his curiosity evident. "If you sleep with her, then where does that leave me? Besides, this is my room." and before things could escalate further, I stepped in, placing myself between Alex and Ethan.

"He's is just a kid and we both are new here - haven't adjusted yet to the foriegn surroundings . I'd prefer if Ethan could stay here with me  a few days until he settles in." My voice was calm, but my heart was racing. The last thing I needed was a confrontation.

Alex's gaze softened, and he nodded. "Fine. He can stay here. I'll see you both later." With that, he turned and left the room, his footsteps echoing softly down the hall.

It was 11 a.m., and I lay awake, the unsettling feeling of the pack gnawing at my nerves. Something felt off, a sense of impending danger that I couldn't shake. I walked out into the hallway, the darkness of the house amplifying my unease.

As I stepped outside, I realized it was a full moon night. The sight was mesmerizing, but it only deepened my sense of isolation. The absence of other houses or familiar faces made me feel even more alone. I wandered aimlessly until I stood at the edge of a cliff, a large water body crashing violently below. The scene was breathtaking, but my anxiety remained.

"You do realize that's dangerous!" A voice from behind made me jump. I didn't need to look to know who it was; his scent, a rich chocolate, filled the air.

"Are you following me?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

"I have better things to do, mate." The word 'mate' echoed with a strange resonance, stirring a mix of emotions within me. It was as if his mere presence had a magnetic effect I couldn't ignore.

"It's not even a day yet," my wolf, Daeliah, said with a hint of frustration.

"I. Am. Gonna. Get. Rid. Of. This. Mate. By. Myself," I told her, each word enunciated with determination.

"Talking to your wolf?" Alex's voice cut through, and Daeliah seemed to retreat, trying to maintain control. The proximity of her mate was an overwhelming force, pushing her to the edge of her restraint.

I sat there, the cool breeze brushing against my skin, and nodded slightly. If I was to complete my mission, I had to navigate this complicated situation with caution.

"Are you scared of me?" Alex asked, his voice tinged with hurt. I could sense the vulnerability beneath his words.

"As if," I retorted, not fully realizing the sting in my response until I heard his soft chuckle.

"You sure are fierce," he said after a pause. "Who are you?" His gaze was intense, seeking answers.

"You already know that," I replied, annoyance seeping into my tone. I was frustrated that he seemed to be playing games with me, knowing full well who I was.

"I want to hear it from you. Is it really that hard for you?" he pressed.

"Davina. My name is Davina. D.A.V.I.N.A," I spelled out each letter with a mix of defiance and resignation.

"Do you hate me?" he asked, moving closer and sitting beside me. His proximity was both comforting and unnerving.

Yes, I do. But I didn't voice it. Instead, I lied through gritted teeth. "No one hates their bread provider."

He remained silent, the weight of my words hanging heavily between us.

We sat in silence, the calm of the night contrasting sharply with the storm within me. The unsettling feeling from earlier was still there, but Alex's presence began to soothe it, albeit only slightly. My exhaustion made me want to sink into that calming presence, and I fought the sleep that threatened to overtake me.

"You can rest your head on my shoulder. I won't bite you," Alex said in a flat tone, an attempt at reassurance that carried a trace of disappointment. I felt a pang of guilt, realizing my earlier words had affected him.

I hesitated for a moment before resting my head on his shoulder. The warmth of his body, combined with the comfort of his embrace, was too inviting. It wasn't long before sleep claimed me, my fatigue too strong to resist.

Alex's POV

She was asleep, her small frame resting peacefully on my one side . I couldn't shake the fact that my mate, whom I had longed for so desperately, didn't seem to want me in the way I wanted her.

"She needs time," my wolf said softly, offering a sliver of understanding.

"But it feels like she's forcing herself to talk to me," I replied, my voice tinged with frustration. My wolf remained silent, sensing the truth in my words.

One thing that gnawed at me was her true identity. She couldn't be the cousin of Luna from the Bluestone pack. Their Luna was a rogue, with no family connections recorded. The inconsistencies troubled me, and I couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to her story than met the eye.

As the cold of the night settled in, I gently slid my hands under her legs and lifted her into my lap. Her head rested against my chest, and I felt my heart race at the unexpected intimacy. I couldn't help but smile as I took off my jacket and draped it over her, holding her close. It was a simple gesture, but it felt profoundly comforting.
