I closed my eyes, focusing on the silver embedded in his body. My heart raced, a mix of fear and determination flooding me. As I began to pull the silver out, it moved from him to me in a steady stream, a painful reminder of my actions . Each second, the pain and burning sensation intensified, but I allowed my wolf's presence to be overshadowed by the magic coursing through my veins. It was a deliberate surrender, a choice that felt both foreign and necessary.
"You're the reason he is in this condition , Davina. "Remember my wolf whispered, though her voice was tinged with an edge of despair and anger . "It's the only way to protect him, even if it means hurting ourself."
I took one last glance at him as I stood up, my breath catching in my throat. His form, once ravaged by pain, was now beginning to heal. There was something undeniably vulnerable about his weakened state, and I could hear his shallow breaths as I bent over him. Our faces were barely inches apart. I could sense the hope that flickered between us, despite the overwhelming sadness that gripped my heart.
With every ounce of energy I had left, I closed my eyes, focusing on the remaining magic within me. My wolf was subdued, and I could feel a surge of power enveloping my body. It was a chance I had to take, and I leaned forward, my lips meeting his in a tentative kiss.
The sensation was electric, a mix of desperation and longing that seemed to pulse between us. It was an instinctive, raw connection, one that defied reason. I didn't understand how it worked, but I hoped, deep down, that it would be enough.
I was torn apart by conflicting emotions. Part of me wished for this to fail, to protect both of us from the entanglement that had become a burden. But the betrayal I felt towards myself was overwhelming. I couldn't escape the reality of the mate bond, a connection that felt both suffocating and inevitable.
"You're not making the right choice Davina , we can still fix this and just go back to him" my wolf tried to convince me me, though her voice was soft and filled with uncertainty. If you can't truly break the bond, at least let him think it's broken. If he believes you're gone, he might stay away.
I stared at him one last time, feeling the weight of my decisions. The bond that had once felt so promising now seemed like a heavy chain, binding us in ways neither of us had intended. I couldn't stay; my presence would only endanger his pack with the threats looming over me.
"Seems like the Moon Goddess made a mistake this time, pairing us together," I said, forcing a smile as I fought back tears. The words felt like a stab to my heart, each syllable a testament to the sadness I couldn't fully express.
"Let's go to where we came from," my wolf replied, her voice trembling with pain. The sorrow in her words was palpable, resonating with the sense of loss that enveloped me.
I turned to leave, my heart heavy with the weight of what I had done. The distant sound of approaching wolves grew louder, a reminder that time was running out. As I heard him whisper, "Please,Dont hurt her . " my grip tightened on the knife I had prepared as my heart sank deeper
"Goodbye, Alex," I whispered, the words barely audible as I sprinted away. I ran with all the strength I had, my only thought to escape as quickly as possible.
Reaching the edge of his pack's territory, I masked my scent, preparing for my final act of concealment. I took the knife and made a shallow cut on my hand, watching as my blood dripped onto the ground. When I was satisfied that my scent would linger long enough, I walked slowly and silently, ensuring the chaos I was leaving behind would be enough to distract.
Turning around, I saw the fire I had ignited spreading, the flames reflecting the turmoil inside me. The panic and confusion I had caused were evident, and I could hear the frantic shouts of people as they tried to manage the blaze.
"Goodbye, Ethan," I said, taking a final step. The burning pain inside me flared up, reminding me that I couldn't stay much longer. With one last look, I stood up, bracing myself for whatever lay ahead.
Three months later
"You just killed five men. What do you have to say for yourself?" Austin's voice cut through the tension, his tone a mix of disbelief and frustration.
"Oops," I replied nonchalantly, wiping the blood from my hands. The nonchalance was a mask, hiding the turmoil within. I had crossed paths with Austin while traveling through East America in search of a witch named Sabrina. He was a vampire whom I had saved from those who hunted him. Since then, he had become a constant presence, following me with an almost stubborn persistence.
We were passing through a town teeming with witches and warlocks. Minutes earlier, I had taken the lives of a few, and their covens were now on high alert. My actions had ignited a chain reaction, one that we were now trying to navigate.
A blue fire flared up in the distance, the unmistakable sign of a tracking spell. My heart sank as I recognized its significance.
"Did you see that?" Austin's voice broke the silence again.
"Uhmm..." I replied, feigning ignorance as I tried to keep my nerves in check.
"The correct answer is no. No, you didn't. Now walk faster," I instructed, quickening my pace toward the car.
"Hey—you, in the blue top—stop!" A voice called out from behind us.
"You're wearing a blue top," Austin observed, seemingly unfazed.
"Act natural," I said, turning around to face the approaching figure.
"For this kind of situation, the most natural thing would be to panic. So technically, I can panic," Austin replied with a hint of sarcasm.
"No, that's not what I meant. Just act like it's a normal day," I insisted, trying to maintain composure as the stranger drew closer.
"My 'normal' days lately have involved a lot of panic," Austin shot back.
"Will you just cooperate?" I asked, my annoyance barely concealed.
"When a person is panicking, they aren't expected to cooperate very well," he countered.
I sighed, listening to his endless stream of commentary. Before I could respond, the stranger was upon us.
"Have you seen these guys around?" he asked, showing me the pictures of the five men I had killed.
"Yes. Well, I killed them. They were trying to come after me when I just asked them a few questions," I replied, glancing at Austin, whose jaw dropped at my blunt admission.
"You weren't supposed to tell him that," Austin whispered, his shock evident.
Before the stranger could react, I placed a hand on his shoulder. "Now you will go and tell your people that these five were attacked by a bunch of demons. You will forget meeting us and the conversation we just had. Do you understand?" I commanded, my gaze locking onto his.
He nodded, his eyes glazing over as he left.
"Did you just control that guy? Like, control his brain and actions?" Austin asked, his voice tinged with awe.
"Honestly, I just wanted to help those people," I said, forcing a smile that didn't quite reach my eyes.
"I just find that hard to believe when you confessed to killing five people!" Austin said as we headed back to the car.
In a moment of frustration, I pulled a small blade from my pocket and threw it at him. It sliced his arm, a shallow cut that barely drew blood. He didn't intentionally dodged it .
His reaction was oddly calm. "I'm dying... let me eat cake," he said, pointing to the cut which was already healing. His eyes were fixed on the cake we brought on the way before getting into this mess of blood and knives .
"You're not dying," I replied, glancing at him.
"Let me eat the cake anyway," he insisted, as I started the car, heading towards England.
As we drove, Daeliah's voice echoed in my mind. What will you do if we run into him?
"Hey, keep it down... that cake isn't for you," I said, trying to focus on the road ahead.
Austin pouted sadly, his demeanor shifting to one of playful disappointment. He gave me those "you are mean" looks, his earlier anxiety replaced by a familiar, endearing frustration.
