Alex's POV

I was in the middle of a shower when a sharp pang of discomfort hit my chest. It was her. Even though we haven't marked each other yet, I can still sense when something's wrong with my mate, especially when she lowers her defenses.

I quickly wrapped a towel around my wet body and rushed to the room, only to find Davina clutching her head with her hands.

Without hesitation, I gathered her into my arms and settled her on my lap, gently stroking her hair. Gradually, she relaxed against me, and I could feel the heat radiating from her body.

My mate worries me to death. Wolves don't get fevers, so the warmth of her body is troubling.

"What's wrong with your temperature? You're burning up! Wolves don't get fevers!" I said, concern lacing my voice.

"You're forgetting I'm not a normal wolf," she replied.

"You're going to be the death of me, little wolf. You worry me beyond explanation," I confessed.

She offered a slight smile at my words.

"It's okay. I'll be fine soon. You should go; you have duties to attend to."

"I'm not leaving you. Not even for a minute. My duty is to the woman I love as well," I said firmly.

A blush crept up her cheeks at my declaration. I pulled her small frame close once more and settled us both on the bed.

"Alex, you're only in a towel," she said, a hint of embarrassment in her voice.

I chuckled at her comment.

"Come on, little wolf. Don't act like you haven't seen me without a towel before. We both know the reality," I teased.

She raised an eyebrow, pretending to be clueless. But before she could respond, my phone vibrated. It was Charlie.

"Hello?"

"Alpha, you were supposed to be on the training ground. Where are you?" Charlie's voice crackled through.

"Sorry, I have a feverish and clingy assassin on my lap. I'll call you back later once I'm done making her recall some sweet memories. Make sure the training goes smoothly," I replied before hanging up.

I turned back to Davina.

"So, where were we?"

"Wine."

"Do we need wine?"

"No, I need wine. You need to put your pants on!" she said, shoving me away.

"But life is so freeing without them," I protested.

"Pants. On. Now," she insisted, giving me a determined look.

"Isn't it impressive how powerful you are for someone who isn't feeling well?" I asked.

She raised an eyebrow and nestled under her blanket.

Davina's POV

I can't shake the voice from my head. It sends a chill through me, an unsettling dominance that comes from having taken countless lives.

Alex left when i was asleep with just a sticky note on my head . he is dealing with some rogue issues on the border. A war seems imminent between us and the rogues, but who would be foolish enough to start a war against the alpha king?

"You were," Daeliah said.

"I was sent to assassinate him, not to start a war. I'm powerful enough to end it, too. As for the leader of the war—" I began, but Daeliah interrupted.

"Can we track the person who sent us here in the first place? Maybe it's him?"

"You're a genius, but I don't have that phone anymore. I lost it."

"Have you lost your brain too? Why do you need a lost phone to access your mail? Give me one reason I shouldn't disown you, you human."

"You're an absolute genius, and I love you, you wolf," I said, laughing as my wolf cringed at my words. I haven't used that email address for months. Goddess knows what's in it now.

I left the room and headed to Austin's. Where has he been all day?

"You smell like him!" Austin said, glancing up from his laptop.

"Don't overthink it."

He raised an eyebrow, curious.

"I need your laptop. As for Alex—" I started, but Austin cut me off.

"Alex?? If you're going to break my heart, can we do it outside?" Austin said, moving his laptop to the other side of the bed.

"But it's raining outside," I replied, reaching for the laptop.

"That way, I can fully indulge in my melodramatic movie moment," he said.

I grabbed a nearby pillow and playfully hit him on the head to stop his ridiculous fantasy.

"What do you need this for?" he asked, handing me the laptop.

"I'll tell you once I get what I need," I said, shrugging.

I sat on the couch, logged into my email, and found 5,629 unopened messages. Not surprising.

I located the email I needed from "hunter666." After 15 minutes, I tracked his email to his number, then to his name and location.

"Matthew Collins?"

"Austin, do you know any Matthew Collins?" I asked, looking up as he peeled an apple.

"Matthew Collins? Son of Luther Collins! I'm sure your mate knows him too. Their family's history of conflict goes back centuries," he said, handing me a plate of sliced apples.

"Really? So, how do I tell Alex that it's Matthew, his distant cousin, leading the rogues into war?" I asked, feeling a bit confused.

"I already know that," a voice said from behind me, sending shivers down my spine as I recognized it
