"Then we went to this little ice cream shop I saw. He was tryna act all hard but he know he liked it," Mia said, telling us about her date with Bash. Apparently, his real name was Sebastian, he had four younger sisters, grew up in Atlanta, and met Derek the week he moved to town. "He kept calling Derek 'Streeter' which was weird. I kept forgetting who he was talking about," she continued."Yeah, the niggas at the hospital called him that too. I guess it's his street name or something," I shrugged. Derek tried to keep me away from all of that but people he worked with would drop by from time to time and everyone referred to him as Streeter. To me he'd always be just Derek.
"So are you gonna go on another date?" I asked Mia.
"Maybe. He was fun to hang out with but I don't know if I'm ready to be apart of the street life with him," I nodded completely understanding where she was coming from. I was constantly worrying about Derek every time he went out. He opened up about some things but I knew he kept a lot from me in an effort to shield me from the reality of what he did.
"I mean Derek does a good job of keeping me away from all of it but part of me wants to know more and be more involved," I admitted.
"Be more involved how? You're the softest person ever, you can't even kill a spider," Jai said, rolling her eyes.
"I'm not asking him to let me kill someone," I laughed. "I just wanna know more about what he does. When he leaves it's always 'I gotta handle something.' He doesn't ever open up about what it is or let me meet the people he works with besides Bash and them," I explained. If Derek had a normal job I wouldn't care about meeting who he worked with. But knowing how dangerous the stuff he does is made me want to know who's around him. Who's there to look after him in certain situations and are they trustworthy.
"You should tell him. He'll probably still try to protect you from a lot but the least he could do is explain some stuff so you're not always in the dark," Devyn agreed with me. I looked down at my phone seeing I had a message from him.
"Oh Jai, he's outside," I said grabbing my bag. He was coming to pick me up and Jai wanted to tag along today. I wasn't sure what we had planned but I knew the three of us together only meant fun. When we got to the car I noticed two heads in the back.
"My dawgs!" I said dapping Gelo and Mario up from the front seat. Mario moved to the back row and Jai sat in the second row next to Gelo. "Where's Bash?" I asked, noticing his presence was missing.
"Recouping from last night," Jaiya joked.
"What happened last night?" Derek asked, looking at me from the corner of his eye.
"He was with Mia," I shrugged. Derek's eyes got wide but he didn't say anything. "What?" I asked, wanting to know why he made that face.
"What?" he said back to me.
"Don't play dumb nigga. Answer my question," I shot back and Gelo and Mario started cracking up in the back seats.
"Yeah answer her question, bitch," Gelo said and I could see Derek wanted to reach back and sock the shit out of him for calling him a bitch. He held tighter on the wheel instead.
"Nothing, Mo. Just wasn't expecting them to really kick it," he lied. I sucked my teeth knowing he was lying.
"Don't play me like I'm dumb either," I fired again. "Fix your face next time and it wouldn't be a problem,"
"She is bitching you right now nigga! Put you in your fucking place!" Mario laughed, adding to Derek's annoyance. When we got to a red light he took his hands off the wheel and grabbed my neck.
