"You're hardly a brother," Derek said, moving past him and unlocking the door. I walked in first and his brother followed.
"Who's this pretty lady?' he said smiling down on me. I smiled back shyly and looked away feeling slightly uncomfortable.
"My girl. Amora this is my brother Damon," Derek said taking a seat on the couch. I sat next to him, scooting close.
"Twin brother actually," Damon corrected and Derek rolled his eyes.
"Why are you here?"
"Shits poppin off in Harlem. I could use your help," Damon said, glancing from me to Derek.
"Ima go make some tea," I said getting up. I could tell whatever it was was family business. I could hear from the kitchen but I knew Derek would fill me in afterwards anyways. They talked quietly but Derek would raise his voice every now and then, clearly angry. When the water was finally down heating up I poured Derek a mug and put a mint packet into it. I left Damon's mug empty because I wasn't sure if he wanted any. I set everything on a tray, including all the tea flavors we had and placed it on the table in between them. Derek hated tea when I first met him but after forcing him to try every flavor there was he finally admitted mint tea wasn't that bad. It always seemed to relax him so I thought it'd be the perfect time for him to have some now.
"I'll head upstairs," I said, bending over to kiss him.
"No, you can stay," he said, not taking his eyes off Damon. He grabbed my arm and gently pulled me back onto the couch with him.
"You sure?"
"Yeah, I'm sure. Damon was just leaving,"
"Derek man, we're brothers. Just hear me out," Damon pleaded.
"Dame, it's always the same shit with you. I told you stop fucking with these people a long time ago, you don't listen. Now you need to deal with the consequences on your own," Derek said before picking his mug up and taking a sip of his tea. I smiled slightly seeing some of the tension he was holding in his body loosen up. What would he do without me?
"I know you did, but it's too late now. I can't change what I did. I need some help and you and your guys have the manpower to do it,"
"This isn't my shit. You think Rodney's gonna let me take some of his men to go handle some Harlem drama that has nothing to do with us?" Derek asked, laughing at him.
"I think you a sorry ass brother if you don't try," Damon responded. The room was silent for a few seconds while everyone thought. Derek was the one who finally spoke.
"Get out," he said quietly.
"Are you going to try or not?" Damon asked, standing up.
"I'm not going to say it again," With that Damon nodded his head and left out the front door. Once he was gone Derek threw his head back on the couch and covered his face with his hands. "My brother is one of the dumbest niggas I know," he mumbled.
"What happened?" I asked, placing a hand on his chest and laying my head on his shoulder.
"Bad business. I told him not to work with these niggas and he doesn't listen and now he wants me to take some of my niggas from ATL and go put this Harlem nigga in check. That's not how this shit works," he said, still covering his face.
"What will happen if you don't help?" I asked and he wouldn't say anything. I moved his hands from his face and saw a few tears slide down his cheek before he quickly wiped them and sat up.
"They'll kill him," he said before getting up and walking to his bedroom upstairs. I sat for a moment processing before grabbing the tray and bringing the stuff back into the kitchen. Derek spoke about his brother only a few times, and he constantly criticized how he does business, but I knew he loved him. After hearing about everything they went through in Harlem as kids I knew there was no way he'd leave him out to dry like that. My only fear was what would happen to him if he got involved.
