"My dad tries to act big and bad but he's really a softy. Well, for me at least. Just be on your best behavior," I instructed. Derek and I were in the car, sitting in front of my parents house. After him popping up and our night at the hotel we agreed it was time for him to formally meet my parents. And hopefully reintroduce him and Adonis in better circumstances."Baby, I know," he said, licking his lips and looking over at me. I wanted to say fuck it and head back to the hotel with him looking at me like that but I took a deep breathe and opened the door. My mom was waiting for us as soon as we got all the way out the car. I wasn't sure of everything that happened between her and Derek the night he showed up but I assumed it was good because she kept asking about him. My mom ushered us in, beaming the whole time.
"You guys just take a seat here, I'll go grab Anton he's being a little brat right now," she rolled her eyes and went upstairs to get my dad. Donnie appeared and stood in the doorway quietly.
"Look man, about the other night," Derek started but Adonis cut him off.
"It's all good. Mora's just my lil sis. I gotta look out for her but if she's straight and she wants you here I'm not gonna stand in the way of y'alls relationship. She's grown now. If she needs me she'll let me know," he said, surprising me. Adonis, acknowledging that I'm grown? What happened to my real brother. Before Derek could respond my dad walked in, clearing his throat. Derek stood and shook his hand politely before taking a seat. Donnie left so it was just us and my parents.
"So, I'm aware that you've been seeing my daughter for some time now," my dad started.
"Yeah, it's been some months," Derek responded.
"My wife told me about the scene you caused in my house a few nights ago. Showing up here uninvited and all,"
"About that, sir," Derek spoke and I looked at him funny. I'd never heard 'sir' come out of Derek's mouth. "As you know Amora came to Harlem to meet some of my family and see my hometown but," he stopped glancing over at me. I hadn't told my parents the full story of what happened or why I was home and I hoped Derek realized that. "We had a misunderstanding so she came home and wasn't answering any of my calls. I never meant to disrespect your home or your family by coming here unannounced, I just really care about Amora. And I wanted to show her I'm serious about her," I grinned, looking at the floor. My dad was quiet for a moment, probably trying to intimidate Derek but I could see in his eyes he wasn't fazed. This sweet innocent act he was playing right now really was just an act.
"I appreciate that, but don't you think if she wasn't answering it's because she didn't want to see you," he finally spoke. My mom grabbed his arm, warning him to be nice.
"Anton," she said in her mom voice.
"I'm just asking the boy," he said and I cringed at him calling Derek a boy. Luckily, D held his annoyance in.
"I understand she wanted some space, but after a week I had to fight for her. I wasn't going to let her walk away just like that,"
"Well, you showing up was a very sweet gesture in my eyes. You came a long way just to make sure our daughter was ok. I'm sure Anton can respect that," my mom said, giving my dad side eye.
"We can," my dad spoke and I smiled happily since he gave in. My dad could be hard headed and loved to argue so it wasn't like him to give up so easy.
"So, now that thats all over we'd love to get to know more about you, Derek," my mom said. Of course he only told the nice school boy side of him. Not the drug dealing ,damn near kingpin piece.
