"Hope?" Josie said as she knocked on the already open door
"You can come in Jo." Hope said as she stood in front of her full length mirror, she couldn't help but stare at herself in the dress her father had chosen.
"You look stunning, you know.." Josie said walking up from behind Hope
"Thank you." Hope said turning away from the mirror and sitting on her bed, Josie walked over and sat next to her
"You know you don't have to lose the pageant for me right? If you want to win, you should. Don't worry about me Jo." Hope said putting her hand over Josie's reassuringly
"No, I want you to win." Josie said smiling at Hope as she put her and over Hope's, squeezing it softly
"That's not why I wanted to talk to you, Hope." Josie added seriously, looking in Hope's deep blue eyes
"You can tell me anything Jo, you know that." Hope smiled
Josie chuckled softly, "Um.. ever since yesterday when I told you that I had a crush on you, I just can't seem to get my mind off your reaction. I just really didn't expect you to react that way, as if you were happy or.. Whatever." Josie said looking down
"Of course I was happy to know that you had a crush on me, Jo. It's funny because.. I had a crush on you around the same exact time. You were actually the first girl I ever liked, romantically. That's a big deal to me Jo, so to hear that you liked me ba-"
Josie interrupted Hope by kissing her, just as Penelope emerged in the doorway, she wanted to wish Hope good luck although she knew she didn't really need it, but they were friends. Were.
Penelope felt her heart drop to the floor, at seeing her new found best friend and the woman she loved kissing. She felt betrayed and hurt, how could Hope do this to her? Penelope walked away as tears pulled in her eyes, somehow whenever she thought she had a reason to stay it'd get pulled out from under her and she just kept getting hurt.
Hope was too surprised to even react as Josie held her gently, cupping her face with one hand while kissing her urgently, it was as if she was hoping the kiss would give her all the answers she'd been asking herself for weeks. The kiss turned softer, as Hope kissed Josie back gently for a second before pulling away.
"Josie.." Hope whispered shocked
"No, no, god i'm such an idiot, I'm so sorry Hope, I didn't mean to-"
"Jo, it's okay, I'm not mad. It's just.. Penelope.." Hope said quietly thinking about her best friend who would hate her if she found out that she just kissed the woman she's hopelessly in love with
"Right you guys are friends.. Girl code, right?" Josie said nodding to herself looking away
"Josie, Penelope loves you. This isn't about some stupid girl code, she only dumped you because of th.. I.. look I can't tell you. It's not my secret to tell. But Penelope, only broke up with you to protect you and that's all I can say until you talk to your dad. He's the one that needs to tell you and Lizzie the truth."
"What?" Josie asked confused looking back at Hope
"What are you talking about? Protecting me from what? What truth? Why can't you just tell me?" Josie asked standing up
"Just ask your dad about the merge, okay? Oh, and Josie please just read Penelope's letter before it's too late." Hope pleaded as she stood up as well
Josie nodded looking at Hope one more time, before walking off to find the letter she hid in a box under her bed
Hope watched Josie walk off as she began to get wrapped up in her own head once again, Josie Saltzman just kissed me. It's funny, I've wanted to kiss Josie since I was 14 and now that I finally did all I could think about was.. Lizzie. It's not funny, it's pathetic. Lizzie and I will never be more than friends, she made sure I knew that when she pretended as if she never got the letter. Hope sighed as she let herself fall back on her bed, why is life so damn frustrating? She thought to herself
