Alaric let the girls wander around on their own while he went to sort out some details over the phone
"Fun fact: this town has the biggest ball of yarn in the country." Josie said smiling at Hope, as she just gave her a weird look in return
"Our hopes of finding anything remotely entertaining in this town are going up in smoke." Lizzie said looking up directly at Hope from where she was sitting on the fountain
"Wait, are you passive-aggressively referring to that fire in my dorm room three years ago?" Hope asked now fully facing Lizzie
"Oh you mean the one that you set on purpose to sabotage our spring break trip with our dad? No, Hope. Why would I talk about that?" Lizzie asked now letting out all the anger she had been keeping inside for years
Dude, you've lost it." Hope said like she was insane
"The only thing that we lost was a week of quality family time. Dad had to cancel the trip to deal with the damage. So mission accomplished." Lizzie said now standing up face to face with Hope
"You guys are just talking about ancient history." Josie said getting annoyed
"You're right, Jo. We should just go find your dad." Hope said sighing as she looked at Lizzie one more time before beginning to walk away, as they both followed her
"This way." Hope said taking a turn
"Does this way take us past the fire station?" Lizzie asked, still not ready to let the conversation go
"Oh, my god. For the last time, I didn't start that fire, and I've never ruined a spring break." Hope said frustrated
"Yea, Lizzie, now's not the time." Josie added walking side by side with Hope, as Lizzie walked behind them
"Fifth grade. You callously gave me the flu while we were building our float for witch week. With global warming, I may never see the Florida Keys. That's on you." Lizzie said bringing up more things from the past
"We built it with Alyssa Chang, who had pneumonia over spring break. It wasn't me, and neither was that fire." Hope said
"Guys.." Josie sighed
"Why did I see you giving us a death glare through the window?" Lizzie asked as, Hope ignored her
They walked into a small motel where they saw Alaric talking to the desk man, getting them a room to stay in, so the girls just sat on the chairs in lobby and waited
"I swear to God, you will do anything to get attention." Lizzie said after a moment of silence
"Said the narcissist." Hope scoffed, rolling her eyes
"Said the... other narcissist."
"Okay, guys, can we please just stop?" Josie asked from between the two who just couldn't seem to stop arguing
Okay, fine. You know what? Maybe I was jealous. Maybe I wanted what you had. A simple day with my family. I lost half of my stuff in that fire, including the only painting I made with my dad. Why would I do that to myself?" Hope asked looking over Josie, at Lizzie
At that moment Lizzie had no more words to say. She felt guilty. For the past six and a half hours she kept bringing it up, she kept attacking Hope for something she now knows she didn't do. Lizzie couldn't look at Hope anymore, she felt way too guilty so she looked away at the ground
And at hearing what Hope said, Josie looked down as well. She felt so guilty. But they didn't know. No one knew. It was the only secret she never told a single soul to.
