I welcomed him in my office and gave him a seat on the chair that is in front of my desk. I opened the paper bag and saw a Bentel box and a cup of coffee. I placed it out of the bag and put it on my desk and then I notice him staring at me while smiling.
"Uhh... it’s a good thing you brought breakfast, I'm really starving" I said
"You're welcome" He responds
I opened the wooden Bentel box and saw and omelet rice with a sushi on the side. I take a bite and it really taste good, I tried drinking the coffee and its taste actually familiar
"This is from your coffee shop isn't it?" I ask with a chuckle
"How did you know?" He asks
"Your coffee has the unique taste that I like" I said while pointing the chopsticks on him
"Glad to hear" He replied
"What brings you here anyway?" I ask
"Well uhh... I came to visit you" He grins and it’s a bit weird that he would visit me even though we just met
I continued to eat and he's like staring at me in the whole time which I feel uncomfortable about it. I hurried to finish my food and my cup of coffee but then he suddenly made a serious look that made me wonder
"What's wrong?" I ask him with a tilt of my head
"What happened to tour neck?" He asks in a worry
I touched my neck and look at the small mirror on my desk. A bruised from the incident yesterday, when Noah nearly choke me to death, but I got lucky and escaped from his arms.
"It’s nothing but a bruise" I replied and look away
"Can I ask why?"
I lean back on my chair and start twisting it side my side "Remember Noah that we talked about yesterday?" I took a recap
"The guy who uses you for money? yeah sure" He answered
"He came into the penthouse and threatened all of us. I don't even know how he pass through the security"
"He asks for a hundred grand and nearly choke me to death" I added
"Who would be stupid to hurt a girl for money?" He fended
"Noah of course" I answered
A moment of silence happened after having that conversation. I started some of the paperwork while he's taking a roam in my office. I glance at him and found him staring at me by the shelves and then directly look away. I chuckle as he looks cute after staring at me. I notice him grabbing something from the shelves and he walk towards me. He placed a very thick medical book about cardiology on my desk and shows it to me.
"You read this whole book?" He asks
"Yep, that's just the first one" I smirked, and his eyes widen as he was amazed
"The first one?!" He exclaimed unbelievably
"To make things clear, I'm still a student, not an official Cardiothoracic surgeon. We have 12 years of schooling and I know I'll graduate one day" I beamed at him and he's like blushing red
"Impressive" He comments
"Well, I still have a mission next week. Director will choose the preeminent team and send them to New York for the ambassador's surgery" I explained
"Well, I believe that you can do it" He smiled at me
That cheered me up, even though I met this guy recently. He made me feel special and he is really kind to me. On the remaining days before the surgery, we spent a lot of time together, every break I have, we go to the mall and go shopping, buy some ice cream, or even visit an arcade. Time by time we get to know each other, I tried asking him if he had CHD and he said ‘no’ without any hesitations. He told me that it was his half brother who had CHD, so I believed in him. We also went mini marketing and some of the nights I ask him for a drink but he refuses and said he don’t drink beers, so I just called Stella to come over to the bar and drink with me, it ends up we got late to work and scolded by our manager.
-----The day of the surgery-----
I’m at the hospital, waiting at the front desk after I ask for a paging for my team. I wobble cant remain patient, I am just too nervous for the surgery and we can’t make it, I don’t know what to do with my team’s problems. Few minutes, my team rushed at me with a complete attendance, we head to my office to get ready. We wear our light green scrubs for the surgery.
“Okay guys, we have to do our best in this surgery. I hope we can make it” I said
(Doctor Diaz. Doctor Diaz, please proceed to the operating theater with your team.) the nurse in the nurse section page my name. I looked at my team for the very last time before we proceed to the operating theater. As we walk towards there, I notice that there are a lot of man in a black suit walk into the entrance. They must be the spectators and I am nervous about it, we continued to walk in the hallway of the hospital. We stop as we saw Doctor Ramiro walking towards us.
“Good luck” He smiled and tap my shoulder and I smiled for a short time
I saw Irene and her team passes by and stand right next to us, but Doctor Ramiro is between. I stared at her and when she notices me, she rolled her eyes and proceed inside, and we enter after them. The operating theater has two sides, two operating rooms and we are on the right side of the theater while Irene’s team on the left side. My stomach started to ache, too much nervousness and excitement I presume. Before we enter where the patient is, there is a locker and a washing area on the side, first, we wash our hands before opening the locker where our uniforms are. We wore the full gear of the surgery, a surgical gown, surgical mask, surgical gloves, and a bouffant surgical cap. My team are the first ones who entered the room and then I followed, we circled the patient and then the telephone rings, one of our nurses answered it and gave us the message from our manager afterwards.
“Doctor Ramiro said we only have 3 hours to perform the surgery, so we must focus” Doctor Amy says
“But it takes 7 hours to take the surgery” I complain
“I know, but that’s our challenge. If we cant make it, the patient dies” She replied
I glance at the patient and remembered the voice of Blue (Noah’s younger brother) asking me ‘am I going to survive Rose?’ that reminds me how I failed him. I look away and face my team “We are going to save this patient” I said
The timer started so we started to perform the surgery. “Doctor Kim, inject the patient with general anesthesia” I ordered then she do as I ordered. I notice that my team is nervous by the look in their eye,
“guys, focus” I say
So we began the surgery, I have the Messer on my hand and have an opening for the heart. We did few procedures for the surgery and it lasted for hours, while doing the surgery my team got more nervous as we haven’t finished the surgery yet and we only have 10 minutes left. I notice that Dr. Cooper’s hand is trembling so “Cooper, stay focused” I hoarse and he looked at me in a little terrified. I ask him to give me the needle but suddenly…he dropped it
“No sh*t!” Dr. Kim said softly
“s-s-sorry, I didn’t mean to” He apologize so hard and see his eyes that is about to cry
We take a quick glance the other team slightly raised their hands as the other nurse walk towards the telephone, and then I glance to their manager on the other side of the glass and saw him smiled.
“Focus!” I say and then they continued. He takes another needle and started stitching.
We finished the surgery and saved the patient, but we did not make it to be chosen. After the surgery, we change back to our white coats and were sent back to the conference room. A meeting with the spectators and the director of the hospital. I see the frown on my team’s faces, and we’ve been silent after what happened.
“So its decided, Irene and her team will be the one who will be sent to New York next month” The director said
“To all student surgeons, you did your best and I congratulate you with that” One of the spectators said
I looked at my team and they’re not even looking at each other, so I decided to talk them in my office but none of them ever came. I wander in the hospital to look over for then then I saw Dr. Kim in the corner aggressively punching the wall so hard.
